I don't have many provenanced coins. Especially with my ancients, I have no provenance beyond "I bought it from this collector or that dealer". Which is sad, as I would much prefer to know when and where my coins were found. I do, however, have one coin for which I know its entire modern history.

This coin isn't much, in terms of rarity or value. But it was originally part of the Martock Hoard, one of the small minority of medium-sized modern-day coin hoards that ended up intact on the open market when none of the local museums wished to purchase it. A local dealer here in Australia purchased some coins (including this one) directly from the dealership that was granted monopoly permission by the finders (who were confirmed as the legal owners once the hoard was disclaimed by the Crown) to sell the hoard in England. Thus, the provenance for this coin runs:

ex Romanorum,
ex Silbury Coins,
ex Matthew and Paul, metal detectorists
ex Martock Hoard, found 21/7/2012 in a ploughed field near Martock, Somerset, England.

Given the apparent near-pristine condition of the coin and the local mintage, it appears to have had very little if any local circulation in ancient Roman Britain prior to being buried, so we can even speculate about it's pre-burial provenance:

ex some moderately wealthy Roman dude who buried his family fortune and never came back for it,
ex London Mint.

Thus, I almost have an entire 1700-year-long history of this coin, from its creation down to me.

This hoard was deposited in the 870s CE, so at most I am missing a tiny portion of this coin's entire history.
