I finally have the time to spend on my collection. Here is one of the first big dollar cards I ever bought. The info I got from the board at the time was key, I wouldn't have purchased it otherwise,

I've been on the hunt for a 1986 Donruss Counter Display Unit for some time. Recently, my seller listed a "Factory Sealed 1986 Donruss 2 Display Unit Case" for sale. I really only wanted one unit, not 2, and since I felt the starting bid was a little high, I just watched it the first time. The first listing ended with no bidders, and it got relisted with a starting bid $100 less. This time I bid, as I figured at the very worst, I'd have a bunch of extra 86 Donruss to rip. This time, there was only one other bidder, and I won for what amounted to $80 less than what it would have cost me if I'd bid the first time.
It arrived today via FedEx, double boxed, with the outer box all beat to hell. The case itself was fine, but the top tape was clearly loose and not "factory sealed".

Yes that says 1985 Donruss, and yes that was what was inside that particular display unit. Here's what it looks like assembled.

Curious, I did the old pack press thing-a-ma-jiggy that seems to be popular amongst some of you, and you probably won't be able to discern, but yes...

Mr. William Roger Clemens makes an appearance. Very cool! The 85s and 86s use the same color scheme on their display unit, the dividers inside are the only thing different. Considering how easy it would be to fake it and assemble a counter unit out of wax packs from a wax box and some action All-Stars, you rarely, if ever, will see an 85 counter unit for sale. I honestly think I've only seen one in 7 years of looking, so it was quite a surprise to get this one "by accident", I guess. Clearly the case was not factory sealed.
Anyway, on to the second unit in the case, it was indeed a 1986 Donruss unit. The unit itself was factory taped shut, so I popped the seal and assembled the unit. I'll do the pack press thing later, but here is the display.

I had mapped out in my mind where I was going to display my 86 unit before it arrived, but now I have to rethink how I want to arrange everything, as I have 87, 88, and 89 Donruss counter units already that I'd like to group together with them. Here is a pic of those from a couple years ago.

I am ever so slightly disappointed, as I was looking forward to ripping into some packs tonight, but absolutely ecstatic that I can now cross off both the 85 Donruss and 86 Donruss displays from my want list.
And no, I don't plan to contact the seller about his listing mistake. Clearly, it wasn't a Factory Sealed 1986 Donruss 2 Display Unit Case. As I mentioned, he was, per usual, a bit obtuse when I messaged him with some questions about it. I'm sure if it was an 88 Donruss display by mistake, instead, he'd be calling me a scammer and refusing a refund. If he sees about it on here, well, all I can say is...Thank You Brian!
The 86 Donruss are MUCH more difficult to see than the 85s. I had to screen grab a bunch of pics of the backs of the stars and try to match up. I've had to take a break after 36 packs because of eye strain, but the top pack in the second stackof 18 that I looked at looks to me like I have a match!...

Sticking with the Donruss displays this month. I had been sorta looking for one of these ever since @ReggieCleveland first posted pics of his some time ago. Just so happened that my LCS recently bought a collection, and this was in it.

Question for you Arthur, if you see this, but would you know whether these counter units would have boxes that were part of the early error print runs, or were they packaged later with the corrected print runs? I guess there's always one way to find out for sure...

That's awesome. Yes, the display cases have been known to contain error boxes. Unfortunately, yours is not an error case. It's still pretty sweet though.
just picked this one up today for $6.99 at value village . It was just being brought from out back to be shelved in the pictures and painting area of the store .. Not all names have been identified.. there are 37 autographs and so far ive identified 23 of them.. they are all Hamilton Tiger-cats alumni .. the players range from the 1950's to the early 2000's .
