I believe I've told this story in some fashion before, but long before my best friend and I could ever drive, his mom would take us all over Missouri and Kansas to hunt down baseball cards. Card shows, garage sales, out of the way gas stations, antique malls and flea markets, old guys that sold cards in their living room, etc. To this day, I don't think she ever really cared about cards all that much, but just enjoyed getting out of the house and taking us around. She would buy cards though when she was with us, talking up and stocking up on "ROOKIES and SETS and UNOPENED BOXES!"(I can still hear her voice and the inflection and emphasizing), practically rubbing her purchases in our faces as some ultra desirable items. She kept them in the closet and dresser drawers in a spare bedroom, and the sole purpose of that, I believe, was that she would often use those items to then "bribe" us into doing yard work or taking our bikes to the grocery store for a few last minute but necessary items, or any other odd jobs.

Hand on the Bible, she had somehow found and bought a factory sealed case of 1984 Donruss back in 1984. I can't tell you how many times we tried to find a big enough job to do for her that would get her to parcel out just one measly box, heck, just a few packs even. She always insisted that the case would never be opened, as that was for her "retirement". We got 86 Donruss, 87 Fleer, 89 Upper Deck from her without much trouble. Never any 84 Donruss.

I've asked my friend occasionally over the years if she still had it tucked away in the closet, and he has assured me that she still does, along with all the other 80s and 90s stuff that accumulated from those days. She now sometimes dangles those other cards in front of the grandkids, to limited success. The 84 Donruss case remains untouched.

I haven't been back to visit her in years to see for myself, but I send my friend text messages every so often, as I did today, when new price levels get reached. She's been retired for 10 years or so now, but now works maybe 16-20 hours a week as a greeter at Wal-Mart, I take it as just for something to do. I don't know if/when she ever plans to sell. It may just end up being an inherited item passed down to my friend.

I just find the thought of that to be hilarious. All of us that salivate over the idea of getting, and perhaps ripping a FASC 1984 Donruss box, and there's an old lady in a small town somewhere that really doesn't care one iota about cards, that is still to this day just sitting on a whole sealed case.

Stupid non wask wearing patron !

Here's the real story from Steve Hart himself.

2020 has been a crazy, crazy year and we aren’t even halfway through it! Every single person has been affected by events over the last 3 months. BBCE and my crew are no exception. In mid-March we were asked to shut down due to the Covid-19 virus that had come to our country. All of my employees were sent home and we had a very limited staff come to work to package and ship orders a couple times a week. More recently, we have had violence and rioting happen in cities across our country. Destruction and looting came within about 10 miles of our offices in separate directions. Wednesday there was a planned protest to come down our street in Schererville and to be safe, BBCE and some other businesses boarded things up. We also sent all the employees home early that day.

Well now monkey wrench #3 has been thrown into the mix. Yesterday, I tested positive for Covid-19. On Thursday the 4th I went for my yearly doctors visit to have my cholesterol and other blood work done. While there I was asked just in general how I was feeling. I said I felt fine, but felt a cold starting on May 24th (I had sent a text home that day asking if we had any aspirin left as I had a headache and a scratchy throat). The cold lasted a couple of days, then mostly went away. Since my dad lives at my house, they suggested I have the test done since I was already at the doctors office and it would be for the sake of my dad anyway. Then last night I got the call that I tested positive. Unbelievable. For many months now I have basically gone to work, then straight home. I would go to the pharmacy to get my prescriptions filled and stop at a restaurant sometimes for food. That’s basically about it. I do not know anyone else who has this virus that lives within 250 miles of me.

So why am I writing this post? Well, here are the reasons for this:

1: Obviously, we had to shut down operations until this is all figured out. All my employees and family members are getting tested today. If it were up to me, my employees and family would be the only circle who would know about this. But we also have to let the customers who came and made authentication drop offs knowledgeable of this. So in the world of fast paced social media, all of this would be out there anyway soon. I just felt I should get out in front of it with the honest facts, before rumor goes around that may not be accurate.

2: Most everyone knows that since the shut down began in March, our industry has absolutely gone crazy! Prices and demand went through the roof. This is especially true for unopened material and stuff we used to consider “junk wax”. When we opened back up to accept unopened box authentication again in early May, we just got absolutely buried. Pallet after pallet after pallet came in of stuff for us to authenticate and wrap. Since I am the only one who does the authentication, I have been working all day, 7 days a week to try to catch up. It seems like if 50 orders ship out, 75 more come in! Our turnaround time before the pandemic was a smooth 7 days. After we started taking submissions in again I have been telling people it could 4-8 weeks depending on the size of the order. Well now for obvious reasons, that’s going to be pushed back a little longer also. I will update everyone once we have more answers on when I can get back to work.

3: We shut down the retail store in March and have still not opened it up. We took an abundance of caution when making these decisions. Every week we would study the situation and decide as a team how to move forward. So while customers would ask us why we hadn’t opened when the whole town did, we just wanted to be overly cautious. I guess we now made the right decision. We will re-open someday, but just not sure at this moment when that will happen.

So while we are waiting in limbo right now until we get all the answers, BBCE will be shut down. My hope is that everyone here tests negative and we can get back to normal sometime soon. I will put out updates on the status of the business as information comes in.

    Thanks—Steve Hart

I was there 2 weeks ago to drop off items to be authenticated. The backlog was enormous! The back dock was packed with unopened boxes and cases waiting to be checked. Masks and gloves were used both by myself and the crew. Here's hoping that Steve has minimal symptoms and his family and the crew are all healthy. Any inconvenience pales in comparison to making sure everyone is okay.

Depends on how you define "well". Sounds like from covid perhaps. However worrying about riots, retail side shut down, constant looming employees health & liability concerns there, dealing with the massive backlog, trying to play catch up from all the above & going 7 days a week on what's got to be an empty tank, one could say perhaps not.

Steve's definitely a glass is half full kinda guy, so things could always be worse!

Keep your head up, Steve. Thoughts, heart and prayers out to you and yours! <3

Amazing to witness what’s going on with 1984 Donruss Baseball BBCE FASC wax boxes over the past month or two. If I’m not mistaken, they’ve gone from $700+ to $900+ to now $1100+ on the BBCE website each time they’ve listed them....and that’s still cheaper than what they’ve sold for on eBay. Crazy!!
