Home from school. 205 students turning in work online. Yup . . . I got Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, but the shops in the area are closing down. However . . . figuring out this photo thing . . . so I just need topical relevance, and I will throw a pic out there.
I grab them when I can. Common . . . yes. Slab rarity is a function of daily rate x the number of days. The Doily, NGC 2.0, 2.1, Black . . . . . . . have rarity because of a small number of function 1 and function 2. The Rattler will never be 'scarce' due to a three-year slabbing timeframe. So . . . they will always be older . . . but they won't ever revamp slab rarity as there are just too many of them.

Such a tough proposition . . .Rattler Jeffs! Keep in mind, back in 'the day', you had a coin the was worth (usually) about .25 - $5 . . .and you were going to spend $12-$14 to certify it. NOT many of those around . . . . (better dates excepted).

Looks like part of a roll I broke up many years ago. Most of the coins were almost white, super light colors. beauties.

It has been an interesting challenge. I have a copy of the pop report from 9/89. Shows about 450+/- MS Jeffersons graded. Better dates definitely got the most submissions.

Actually ,. . . . NOT a Rattler !! MUCH better! You have a Doily with the outer ring cracked off. The original Rattler case was used for the Doily . . . look at the insert compared with the others in this post.

How much does having the outer ring cracked off hurt the collectibility of this slab?

Perry . . . . . many discount them heavily but are unaware of the simplicity of repairing the outer ring. Just get a PCGS 2.0 (common 4-pin--the ONLY common 4-pin), find the location where the top and bottom of the ring unite (NOT . . . in the place that looks obvious), slide an X-Acto around 3/4 of the ring, just enough to make a "clamshell" . . .slide out the old 2.0 and sell it for junk . . .take the ring and slide it around the Doily . . . .a small dab of SuperGlue . . . .done.
I teach this at almost every coin show I attend . . . takes 3 minutes.

To this day I still feel rattlers are the best looking way to display a coin in a slab. I love the "floating" appearance.

Such a cool group! Until your post now, I’ve never really noticed how few jefferson nickels there are in rattlers. Also, that 1943/2 caught my eye!
There are lots of good reasons to crack a rattler........and only one reason not to do that.
There is a market for rattlers. But while coins entombed 35-40 years ago were graded to "perhaps" a stricter grading standard, they are not graded to a contemporary grading standard, and photo images of the rattler probably do not exist.
I think rattlers are best described as a collection of coins and antiques.....and fulfilling the needs of both.

As of in all things, it depends. I have been told by various dealers, several of whom have already offered me MS63 - MS64 money, to not bother cracking the DBHE $1 slab, indeed to not bother CAC'ing it either. Needless to say, I have no plans to crack it. Good Lord willing it won't be sold for another 20ish years, during which I and my family plan to enjoy it.

Of the almost 600 Lincolns I have - this is the only rattler.

One neat one to look at is the 1951 Lincoln as the label was torn in two pieces and the reverse label was installed upside down, only one I have ever seen.
My 1893-S Morgan would be my most expensive Rattler and I have ten 1881-S in serial number order and a grading set of 81-S in AU-58 to MS-66.
Been at this since 2006 and still buying them today, never got a white rattler though.
