Here's one still in the lucky piece holder where I might have been interested in it for the holder, but I have no idea what the holder says other than "CARS" and the seller did not respond to a request for more information.

I was watching that coin, the rim clip is genuine but as you no doubt noted, the "die break" is a fresh and very deep scratch.
No idea why but there were three or four low grade clipped 1922-D cents listed in the past couple of weeks,

I have been noticing more and more of these "monitor" coins lately … mostly (and curiously) from seller's acquiring coins at auction (HA, S-B, etc.) and, before they even have the coin in hand, using the auction house's photos to advertise the coin with the intent to flip it for a profit. Heck, if they need to flip it that quick, maybe they shouldn't have bought it! The whole idea of selling a coin before you even have it in hand (and "monitor" photos) completely turns me off anyway. But to each their own I guess....

The price was probably fair with the damage. A straight XF with that size clip, if I had it for sale, I would ask around $35 - $40. It's not what I would consider a better early date for clips.

I sent this seller a message telling him that the coin had been altered and he should return it to the consignor, and he replied basically that I did not buy it from him and should mind my own business.

That ebay listing is calling it die state 2 which I don't believe it is due to a weak second number 2. I'd never buy a coin like this in raw condition.

Looks like damage to me, but the seller will not answer my questions about the coin.
What do you think? Maybe an ex-lucky piece coin?
The coin looks slightly bent to me, I see an indentation in front of the portrait and a matching raised crescent on the reverse through the left side of ONE CENT and USA. That would certainly scan with the coin having been encased at one point.

Possibly a lucky piece, usually the ones that have a coin pressed into them have rim damage when the coin is removed.

Interesting thread... 1922 d cents in MINT STATE RED and uncleaned or worked on are very hard to find.

No MS 1922-D's for me, but I do have encased cent which is a 1922-D in XF-AU. I had to snap that one up because of the date.

Years ago, I came across a 1922-D in an encased white metal holder for a bank... Trying to remember the bank and I am having a senior moment. I thought it was so unusual in that I just do not recall seeing a better date cent used in this capacity... But in all fairness, who would have known that at the time it was done?
It does sort of beg the question about surviving population.
In thinking about this further, I have seen B&O RR encased cents dated 1933 from the Century of Progress. And those are very cool for what they are...
