Here are 4 different pics of the 1792 Chain Token Silver Center - reverse. How would the silver plug wander so far around in it's position? Wouldn't they all be centered accurately (not all drilled at the same time)? Or maybe Dan sneezed while drilling out the plug holes, ?? Curious minds...

The holes in the copper are made with a hole punch, not unlike punching out a small blank from sheet metal.
But things are positioned by hand (eyeball) so some wandering is to be expected. The silver plugs are made with the same punch set and then hammered into the void.

Wow thanks Dan for the factoid. Totally knew there was a method of the smartness! I would expect a different coin of production when you consider <100 pcs in ANY type of striking. Gotta love the individuality with your pieces. Cheers!

So a fellow forumoid and I were discussing the "scratch" or "die blemish" on die pair #9 1964d Peace Dollars. It's a minor mark just south of the R in LIBERTY on the obverse. This mark is on ALL of my DP9 64 dollars, so I assumed it was some type of die blemish. Does anyone else have this mark on their DP9 Peace's? Or maybe more importantly NOT have this mark?
I can confidently say that it does not appear on earlier die pairs, including DP8. What say you?
For clarity sake, I don't mind the mark -- this is not a complaint.

Your closeup shows it fairly indistinct but still there -- far more visible when unmagnified, as in the first image above. I'm guessing it's a die gouge -- but can't tell if it's raised or incuse. Regardless, so far it appears to be just a minor die trait at this point. If nothing else, it appears to be a die diagnostic unless someone has something different. This kind of thing makes die varieties FUN !!

The mark just below (touching) the "R" of LIBERTY is technically a "lathe line" artifact from the engraving process. I've "lapped" the dies a couple times and succeeded in removing a similar line that appears on the earliest over-strikes and that line extended down from the "L" of LIBERTY. But the one next to the "R" remains, obviously.
Thanks for the explanation -- and why it appears more bold on some. The example I posted was likely an early strike then, where @robecs piece is subdued/later struck. Faint concentric lathe lines are also visible in both examples elsewhere, but not very visible when in your hand, and of course, very striking!!

The Mint did the same with the 2019 ERP. Anything can happen. There was a big release of Morgan dollars by the treasury years ago that caused a year (I can't recall) to plummet in price because it was previously thought to be scarce but the release proved otherwise. Not defending or condemning any of those instances but it does happen.
Anyone have a 1917 Broken Sword Peace Dollar with a matte finish? I was sorting through a few I have and noticed two have a very matte finish on the obverse, but the reverse is more of a shiny satin. The MM website indicates 3 - 1917's were given a post-strike matte/antiqued finish (not released). Here's a few shots:

Those were from my first issue of "Broken Sword" Peace over-strikes. Some of the early "1917" over-strikes had better details than others (same die, just different over-striking parameters). The "matte" examples shown are from a recently bead-blasted die. They are not post-over-strike bead-blasted. As the die is used, it will develop more "cartwheel" luster and becomes very slightly more proof-like.
Thanks Dan -- I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that as dies get used, they develop more luster! Counter-intuitive. So these were likely early strikes. This stuff is why I like your products, it's not only the piece, but HOW in process it came to be. Another mystery solved!
