for those of you interested in such things, image restoration software has came light years. watch some youtube vidz and you may end up with a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for using these challenging images. i've seen incredible things done.

I'll play Devil's Advocate... I think the image quality of the second coin makes it next to impossible to say, with 100% certainty, that they're the same coin. There are some diagnostics evident (the streaks on the obverse), but nothing I'd hang my hat on.

Then you need to bone up on your matching abilities, because there are multiple pups besides the ability to understand what that means in the overall task.
Well, I work in a different venue... clinical laboratory. I think my "matching abilities" are fine, but that's only when people's lives are at stake...

Sure looks like a match although the toning might have deepened since the matrix dot plate.
Yep.
Really looks like it

I would bet on it. Lots of reference points.
Undoubtedly!
The first is the Simpson coin, PCGS MS-62. It was once run over by a Brinks truck, but saved by the holder.
The second is ex. Superior 1/1979, lot 666, there graded AU50.
From what I see... yes.
from what I can see yes.
Sounds like the grade revisions over time for these coins are similar to those of the 1804 dollars.
Same.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
They appear to be the same coin... though the lower image leaves much to be desired. There are PUP's though... Cheers, RickO

Yes, I believe so, judging from the toning pattern.
So is it a victim of gradedeflation? :-)
Same, beautiful coin
Absatively!
BTW, the Superior catalog is, of course, on the NNP, and also has a color plate, making the matching even more obvious.

I am going to go against the over-all consensus and state, yes, they're the same coin.
Yes.
Lance.
The overall consensus is clearly in the same coin camp, so you’re not going against it.
Mark Feld* of Heritage Auctions*Unless otherwise noted, my posts here represent my personal opinions.
Here is a comparison using the color plate from the NNP and the PCGS TrueView with obverse rotated to match.

Agree it's the same coin. There are lots of matching diagnostics. Here's the TrueView.
PCGS lists the Simpson provenance but it's not in any registry set at the moment.
I unhesitatingly declare it so.

I am also going to valiantly oppose M. Feld's accusation and state I agree.
Absolutely
