Oh no, terrible news for him and anyone. Mr. Bressett has a great eye for coins so I'm sure his loss is huge. I wonder if he was at a coin show.

If the items stolen were coin related then...

If the items stolen were just anything of perceived value then...

Was the place ransacked? If not, someone knew too much about the layout of the residence.

    Hope everyone is/was safe.

This is horrible. I hope these items can be recovered quickly and the thieves apprehended! It would be helpful if they were all well documented.

I also wonder if those were just what he happens to have at home and if other things were in a SDB?

In general, I wonder if thievery could be on the rise as we even have a Congressperson publicly supporting not paying subway fares.

  • BillDugan1959BillDugan1959 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭✭✭

If I had owned 20 nice Chinese silver sycee and lost them, that would be a terrible terrible shock. Mr. Bressett is the kind of person who no doubt had nice ones.

Thing thing is that the fares aren't free right now. It would be better to change the program so the fares are free, but that's not what's happening. I’ll just leave it at that.

Just be careful for your coins.

At this point I’d say it’s a crime thread. I worry about general crime and my coins at home as thieves have been in our neighborhood and to our door. I have coins that I don’t post as this is a big concern of mine. This also affects whether I get a pedigree for my coins. I think about this a lot and want to get one but I may wait till I’m ready to sell since I’d like to use my name for my pedigree. Another option is an anonymous one but that still provides aggregate info. If crime isn’t a legitimate topic here, then so be it.

Crime was low when the used to Hang thieves. I believe other countries use "Harsh" treatment to criminals even today in 2019. Just say'n. Hope he recovers his time/sweat labor.

Let me introduce a little "humor" into this awful occurrence.

Don't be so hard on thieves! There may be extenuating circumstances. Since most "bleeding heart" wonderful people fail to realize that dead criminals cannot commit any more crimes on society ever again, first-time offenders should only lose the use of their writing side arm up to the elbow. The Only exceptions would be in particular cases. For example, a coin thief would lose both hands. A car thief would lose both feet. I assure all of you that with a two-week national warning of the new policy using all forms of communication, crime would SPIKE and then be reduced to very little after several Pay-for-View executions of the sentences. Additionally, the fees charged for viewing would reduce our National Debt. :)

Reminds me of a George Carlin skit.

Apparently, you are the one with "politics" on the mind. This has to do with crime, how we have changed our way of treating criminals, and the fact that free things form our government does not affect the crime rate.
This is not about politics. Politics involves the belief/opinions of the left and right. Unfortunately, crime involves all of us no matter what we believe. No mention was made about either political belief in this discussion.

First , before I post I must apologize to the snowflakes. I must also apologize for my stereotypical experiences, my apparent distaste of older folks, what I say about some women, and continuing to lead this discussion away from its purpose. I'll also remind a few readers that this post has nothing to do with your political leanings.

From what I have observed in the past, I'll report that some older women have blue hair and all old men have white hair unless they have it colored.

I respectfully disagree. Since this is a crime thread, I just read an article about the impact of California Prop 47. They made shoplifting of items of less than $975 such a minor offense, that in San Francisco shoplifting is now so brazen, the thieves just walk into stores, and openly shop lift rampantly, knowing the stores no longer call the police, since the police no longer do anything, as they now devote their time to “more important” crime. I’m not making a political statement, but just pointing out facts and results of certain policies.

Sad news. I hope Ken recovers what was stolen. Lots of irreplaceable stuff. Maybe the thief is stupid enough to try selling everything to Hallenbeck's.

Please don't quote news sources that are pushing the idea that crime is going up and getting worse in the U.S. while it is actually going down, violent crimes as well as property crimes. We are lucky in that respect and should feel more secure, not fearful. Fox News is not reliable or accurate on this subject and seems to be stoking fear. Fear sells better than security.

    https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/10/17/facts-about-crime-in-the-u-s/

Crime rates are falling in California, both violent and property crime. Colorado, where this burglary took place, is a more mixed picture. Violent crime is rising, especially in Colorado Springs while property crime is falling.

    https://www.ppic.org/publication/crime-trends-in-california/
    https://www.valuepenguin.com/how-crime-has-changed-colorado-cities-past-five-years

The fact that Mr. Bressett had a large quantity of gold jewelry stolen suggests that this may have been the target or at least what attracted the thief's attention.

While overall crime in California may indeed be going down, you have not been able to dispute the facts that I have referred to, which were tied to a prior comment about "free" things and crime. In the case I quoted, "free" things are being obtained by shoplifters in an illegal manner. Regardless, let's not get off point regarding the unfortunate event that happened to Mr. Bressett. A good week to all.

I think this thread is going bye bye soon.

I live in California and petty crime like shoplifting is on the rise in the big cities prompted by changing laws. Shoplifting is now a misdemeanor if the value of the stolen goods are less than $975.

Wow. This thread started off with good intentions to publicize a numismatic crime and somehow devolved into a morass of poo emojis. Boorish, garbage threads like this (not the OP's fault whatsoever) might be the reason people wonder "where is the forum participation" or "where are the young 'uns?'

    @BryceM

Very well said. It applies to numismatics also. Ignorance of anything (through no fault of their own) makes any discussion with such a fellow like trying to convince a CRH that his PMD coin is not a rare variety.

In the case of this robbery report, we are lucky that the "facts" therein have not changed in the rush to report them. Perhaps a member who has spoken to Ken in the last few days can encourage him to list the most important stolen items here. Otherwise, it may be best for the rest of us not to bother him at this time.

You deserve a BIG DISAGREE! :p I believe everyone posting in this thread cares. Unfortunately, after "I'm sorry for your loss" there is nothing else to add. Perhaps the shift away from "Sorry" to a discussion of how to keep our coins safe, the reason for this sort of crime, or a list of coins to watch for would make a good addition to your OP.

Can you ask Ken to post some specifics of the stolen coins. I'll bet that Auto dollar will be headed over the pond so it can be placed in a collection away from eyes that will recognize it. This is a good argument for True Views and slabbing expensive coins.

In the early days, ANACS took images of every coin sent in along with weights. Today, several TPGS offer a photo option. Perhaps, folks could ask the TPGS's to offer a Photo ID only service with out paying for a slab.

Just get the free stuff in your state or any state as most states it is a misdemeanor... just different thresholds.

But of course, California bashing seems to be a sport by some. Jealously I guess.

Well I thought I had missed out by not opening this thread sooner but maybe that was a better idea. :#

In any case, regardless of who gets what for free and which state has them most dirty sidewalks, ,the loss as described is terrible and as someone mentioned, seems personal. I'll have to admit, though, that NCIC bulletin in the first post is a bit vague on the details. If all of that stuff walked through my door at once it might set off alarm bells in my head, but a random example or two from that collection might not conjure up a connection.
