2 days ago I got a call from a dealer, he had a coin for me. I have been building a type set from 1793-1807 for a couple of years and additions of the right coin is getting harder and harder.
Finally I got a chance to get to his shop, instantly had to have the coin. The story of the coin is it was purchased in the late 1950's with three other large cents, a wreath cent and a 1795 large cent for a total price of 300 dollars. the coin sat in a safe until it was graded about a decade or so ago. The other 2 coins were not right for my collection, but this chain cent called to me.
just some quick pictures, the date is much more obvious in hand, I guess this variety comes with a weaker date

Anyone care to guess its grade.

currently in pcgs f12. I feel it is at least a 15

The coin looks like a solid VF - that’s quite a nice “new coin to the type set”!

    Wow, great coin!
Very tough to find this nice, has to be VF something, I'll guess 25 but wouldn't be surprised at higher, 15 or lower and she's a screaming bargain imho

So cool to see these without any rim issues. Great choice! My vote is VF25.

I should add that I’ve been a big fan of the quality of coins you post here. Would love to see the set when it’s complete.

Coin is currently in a pcgs f12 holder. Best looking F chain cent I have seen. I have spent a lot of time looking at this coin today. Cool piece of history

I would have guessed 20 before I saw the grade posted, really nice! I still lack a chain as type. If only that coin could talk!

  • amwldcoinamwldcoin Posts: 11,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

If that's in a 12 holder it is silently net graded due to the surfaces.

I've always liked the periods variety the best, but so few of them are as nice as yours.

Wow... nice coin... 12?? My initial impression was 20. Weakly struck obverse with a banger reverse.

    Great coin.
    Beautiful planchet.
That has to go at least a 15 on regrade.
