NEED BETTER IMAGE! This looks cleaned. Probably a commercially graded AU-50 or 53 weak strike.

I think it only looks that way when you blow up the fuzzy image.

The pics don't look too bad.

I don't recall seeing reeding slanted like that and not all the way around either. The reeding looks very funky to me and I would wager with a good picture you could probably see some of the classic tooling marks around the edge. I could be wrong and it could be the pictures.

Agree with Insider, likely cleaned, commercial low AU at best.

Does not look too "cleaned" to me, though the pictures aren't the best. I do see a few spots that may be enough to get it in a details holder because of damage though (under the date on rim, etc). Still a decent looking coin!

    Here's another one for comparison...

I hope I'm wrong but that strengthens MHO.

Cleaned or counterfeit, I’d pass with it raw and those pictures...

Based on the poor pictures, my guess would be AU details (cleaned or rim damage)

I don't see any reeding on the pictures, what am I missing?

The "denticals" (teeth) around the rim. Many call them "dentils."

It looks lower AU to me and from your pictures it looks like it was cleaned.

Charlotte and Dahlonega gold coins are pretty scarce. Some call those and New Orleans gold Rebel Gold. They are popular with many collectors especially the C and D coins. That one looks like a good 45 to me if genuine and if it will straight grade. I would avoid raw Rebel Gold.

It appears to have a weak strike, especially on the reverse.

The denticals seem to match the picture of the coin we know to be authentic. I think the big question is are we missing something with the fuzzy pictures.

I think the coin is authentic, probably an AU grade. It has probably been cleaned at some point, but would not be surprised if it straight grades. They tend to be forgiving in the old Southern Gold.

That is the large date variety. Look it up in Coin facts. Good info there.

Sorry, but I can't believe you bought it from those pictures unless it was really cheap ... like melt or close to it.

    It's too risky otherwise.

About $120 over melt... But I took a gamble on it.

Or learned to send a real Dahlonega gold coin to our host. If this works out it's a great deal though.

AU obverse, VF reverse would add to my concern of the coin being genuine.

A lot of these have weak strikes on the reverse. > @BillJones said:

Most places offer refunds if not genuine. It would be dumb NOT to buy it at $120 over melt. Easily worth more if real, even if in a details holder.

It certainly doesn’t look AU to me, based on the new pictures. I’d go with VF, quite possibly a details grade.

Given the rim issues and the possible surface disturbances, I’d say that VF-35 would be a gift. I’d grade it 5 to 10 points lower, if it gets a straight grade at all.

Looks more real! From your pics I don't think it will straight grade but a bargain if it is real! I hold judgement til I can see it in hand!

Oops... thought the graded (TPGS) results arrived.

Plan on sending it in for grading/authentication?

As is (raw) it might be hard to sell.

I will probably send it in on the next PCGS public Friday event in Oct (next month). I need to update my membership first.

Heck of a deal for $120 over melt! I think your pictures have bad lighting which can make it look more cleaned that it really is. Hard to tell if it would straight grade or not. I thought it would with the original pictures but not sure with yours. An awesome deal either way though. I can see an XF grade possibly.

    Thanks John...

I don't see no hairlines on either side. The obverse has some contact marks around the cheek area, and braided hair. A few small areas around or near the rim. The reverse has that typical weak strike around the shield and breast area. Has a nice reeded edge with no rim bumps just some very slight contact marks. Some slight luster still remains on the high points near the stars. It's definately an XF for sure, and maybe an AU.
    Fingers crossed !!!

From the pictures I see no chance that the coin grades AU. VF details but good pick up for $120 over melt. $500-600 coin perhaps.
