    SLABBED CHOCOLATES AND OTHER RARITIES

    I was intrigued to hear about the chocolate NGC holder that David Lange described in the last issue. Although it sounds improbable, the PCGS holder containing a See’s Candies chocolate Franklin half dollar is real. As described on page 533 of the Sample Slabs reference, my friend Mike Vanyur, a coin shop owner turned PCGS grader, made this unique piece as a joke while working at PCGS in late 2005. I had the opportunity to handle and photograph the slab when Mike consigned his sample slab collection to me in 2014. Search CoinTalk and the Collectors Universe US coin forum for discussion of my failed attempts to sell the chocolate Franklin, which led to over 1,500 views of the eBay listing. Mike sold the holder to California error coin specialist Jim Cauley of Errors and More, who sold the Franklin to a collector whose name I do not know. I heard that it melted in the summer heat and is no longer in mint condition.

    I just bought one of these too.
    ...and after doing some research, IGA appears to have been a boiler room type operation and got into a bit of trouble. In their hayday people were paying 300-600 for these!

    WoW, that AFCGS holder is quite the doozy!
    In addition to the nonsense barcode, they also reminded us that it was "slabbed". How nice of them.
    I just wonder where the other 6,562,040 other AFCGS holders before this wound up? Is there a monumental hoard around somewhere waiting to be found?

    Been collecting the plastic for over 14 years now and have over 80 companies but I seem to be only half way to the companies Conder101 has found. May of the slabs in this thread I have, but there are a few that are new to me.
    I am glad to see a copy of Conder101 book in here as I have never seen it. the book was all sold out before I started to collect the slabs.

    These have been a fun way to collect coins and I have meet many people that like them too. At shows many dealers are glad to here about my collecting diversities. And I am always learning something new about the hobby.
