POLL: Do you collect gold quarter eagles?

I'm curious to hear from collectors --- whether you collect $2.50 gold pieces or not. What are your thoughts on these coins?

No; I don’t collect them at all, and I don’t own any.

I forgot. I have about almost a dozen examples of genuine and counterfeits. Now I only collect the fake ones.

Yes, I’m a very active collector. I’m constantly upgrading my set(s), and/or I compete in registries, or am otherwise very active (e.g., cherrypicking or collecting by die variety or die state; and/or a member of the Southern Gold Society or other dedicated groups).

I focus on the coins I cannot afford - that keeps my options open when new specimens show up of rare dates/mints. :)

The Indians are too common, too small and not enough flavor or rarity. Could buy an ok set at almost any larger show.

Now the libertys are too rare, too many and outside my abilities price wise to do a cohesive set. A Cal is a dream coin.

The early ones are simply for bigger millionaires than I

Yes, I’m a casual collector; I collect them, but not as my primary hobby niche. (Includes type-set collecting.)

Need the option for done that still have them but not upgrading; for me anyway.

I collect gold Libertas Americana medals and 1914 Liberty Head nickels for much the same reason.

Yes, with a focus on Dahlonega issues. I am always on the hunt for the die and mintmark varieties of the 1839-D, 1841-D, 1843-D, and 1846-D/D.

No dirty old gold here! I collect the 1900-1907 Liberty QE short set in CAC-approved high grades (66/67). Love those little glowing gems!

Dear Sir, I assume you mean gold originals of the Libertas Americana.

    Gold originals.

Replicas in gold are rather darned common.

No... I prefer the large gold coins (though I would never refuse a gift :D )....I do have the $5 & $10 made from unpolished proof dies though.... Cheers, RickO

Indian Head QE. Just a date set, tho. The '11-D is out of my league.

I prefer double eagles....more particularly Saints.

Quarter Eagles are too small for my liking.

One Liberty and one Indian are part of my Type Set(s). I made sure the Liberty was dated 1900 or later, so it could also count for my 20th Century Gold Type Set in addition to my Gold 8 Piece and Gold 12 Piece Type Sets, without having to purchase a third coin.

Not every detail applies in the description but my one and only complete set (Indian Quarter Eagles). These are my favorite coins.

I have said for years I have seen 3-4 cal 1848 for every non-Cal I have seen.

    I agree with you

No. Owned some in the past, sold them to buy a house instead. Just not in my budget to start again.

no, I don't collect them. I have almost a complete set of $10 Indians grading anywhere from au-50 to MS-66. I like the size of the $10 Indians and also have several $10 liberty's. also collect the $20 liberty cc's and have several $20 ST Gaundens

I have had a few in the past but currently this is my only example.
It's a first year gold $2.5 coming out of the New Orleans mint. Great story behind this piece and the counterstamp, which apparently was done at an assay office signifying it's lightweight status.

Eventually I would like to add to my collection the last $2.5 piece the New Orleans mint produced, the 1909 Indian... one day...

It's all about what the people want...

    That is a $5 half eagle .

I’m plugging away at a set, albeit very, very slowly. All are PCGS VG8 or lower. Something special about gold lowballs.

A slabbed MS64 Swiss 20 Franc I recently purchased which has .1807 AGW was less expensive (and had more gold) than an AU common USA $2.50. My vote is world gold.

I have one. Purchased only because the price was irresistible. Just posted a photo to asheland's birthday thread...

I once had every Charlotte mint date in the QE series except for the '46-C, '54-C and '56-C. I planned to complete the set, but that plan eventually lost steam when I decided to put more effort into early Half Eagles. Now, all that's left is this little guy:

1860-C is a seriously difficult coin to find - especially with CAC approval.

I am somewhere between option #1 and option #1. I have all of the types, a complete date and mint set of the Classic Heads, a complete set of the Indian pieces, an 1848 CAL. and an assortment of other dates.

I am not very active in U.S. coins any more, so that makes me something less than option #1.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Great looking gold coins up there, amazing dates and conditions! I have a few, not a collector of them at all! Here's a poor man's Classic Head! Hope my pics work! :D
