I'm curious to hear from collectors --- whether you collect $2.50 gold pieces or not. What are your thoughts on these coins?

    I forgot. I have about almost a dozen examples of genuine and counterfeits. Now I only collect the fake ones.

    I focus on the coins I cannot afford - that keeps my options open when new specimens show up of rare dates/mints. :)

    The Indians are too common, too small and not enough flavor or rarity. Could buy an ok set at almost any larger show.

    Now the libertys are too rare, too many and outside my abilities price wise to do a cohesive set. A Cal is a dream coin.

    The early ones are simply for bigger millionaires than I

    Yes, with a focus on Dahlonega issues. I am always on the hunt for the die and mintmark varieties of the 1839-D, 1841-D, 1843-D, and 1846-D/D.

    No dirty old gold here! I collect the 1900-1907 Liberty QE short set in CAC-approved high grades (66/67). Love those little glowing gems!

    Replicas in gold are rather darned common.

    I prefer double eagles....more particularly Saints.

    Quarter Eagles are too small for my liking.

    One Liberty and one Indian are part of my Type Set(s). I made sure the Liberty was dated 1900 or later, so it could also count for my 20th Century Gold Type Set in addition to my Gold 8 Piece and Gold 12 Piece Type Sets, without having to purchase a third coin.

    A day without fine wine and working on your coin collection is like a day without sunshine!!!

    Not every detail applies in the description but my one and only complete set (Indian Quarter Eagles). These are my favorite coins.

    I have said for years I have seen 3-4 cal 1848 for every non-Cal I have seen.

    no, I don't collect them. I have almost a complete set of $10 Indians grading anywhere from au-50 to MS-66. I like the size of the $10 Indians and also have several $10 liberty's. also collect the $20 liberty cc's and have several $20 ST Gaundens

    I have had a few in the past but currently this is my only example.
    It's a first year gold $2.5 coming out of the New Orleans mint. Great story behind this piece and the counterstamp, which apparently was done at an assay office signifying it's lightweight status.

    A slabbed MS64 Swiss 20 Franc I recently purchased which has .1807 AGW was less expensive (and had more gold) than an AU common USA $2.50. My vote is world gold.

    I am somewhere between option #1 and option #1. I have all of the types, a complete date and mint set of the Classic Heads, a complete set of the Indian pieces, an 1848 CAL. and an assortment of other dates.

    I am not very active in U.S. coins any more, so that makes me something less than option #1.


    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
