    The Honorable Richard J. Oglesby (1824-1899), three times Governor of Illinois and United States Senator:

    Oglesby was badly wounded at the Battle of Corinth, October 1862. Very popular even before the Civil War, he conducted a successful gubernatorial campaign in Illinois in 1864, which featured 'waving the bloody shirt' capitalizing on hard feelings against the South. Despite some difference in age, Oglesby was a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln, and he spent a very pleasant afternoon with Lincoln on Thursday, April 13th, 1865 in the glow of the week after the Southern surrender. Two days later, Oglesby was in the room at Petersen House when Lincoln died.

    Oglesby was widowed during his first term as Governor, and he made a very successful second marriage to a very wealthy widow. This led to a second election as Governor in 1872 and quickly led to his elevation to a six year term in the U.S. Senate, following some electoral shenanigans in Springfield. He later served a third and final full term as Governor.

    Governor Oglesby had several children with his second wife, Emma Gillett Keays Oglesby, and one son served two non-consecutive terms as Lieutenant Governor of Illinois. This medal was struck while his son was successfully attempting to regain that office in 1916.

    Oglesby rushed to California in 1849 and brought back some serious money from that. Supposedly he long owned two fifty dollar slugs that he brought home with him, but these have been lost to the historical record.

    Richard J. Oglesby was quite a footnote person in our national History.

    Fun picture, but that is not taken from the ISS. That is the launch of STS-134. I believe that's taken by a T-38. If not it was taken by a modified Gulfstream, both of which NASA uses as chase planes. Here's the next photo in the sequence...

    A friend of mine, Greg Johnson, is piloting the flight. He is a LOT of fun to BS with. The crew did a joke crew image reminiscent of a Star Trek poster. Greg is just to the right of the Commander of the flight (e.g. he is above the 34 in STS-134).

    Here's one on the other end of a mission. Picture taken from T-38 watching as STS-3 comes gliding in for landing.

    Something like that. Ship, train and miles and miles of walking. (10 miles alone one day in Kyoto that included the 1000 Tori Gate climb to the top of Mt. Inari,)

    I see in posting the Kyoto views I failed to include ones with Sakura. Here are two from the trek up the Tori Gate lined Inari Mountain with a view above Inari Shrine looking down on Kyoto as well as several from Kiyomizu Shrine:

    Anyone have some images of the Cherry Blossoms around the Tidal Basin in DC? I grew up in the area and have not been back to DC in 29 years. Oops, I forgot we have the Internet these days.
