Boy, have the 1995-W Silver Eagles fallen out of favor...

DCWDCW Posts: 7,609 ✭✭✭✭✭

Well, we all know these were "free" when you bought the 4 piece gold set in 1995. But, geez...this used to be a $5,000 coin.
Do you think the thrill is gone, or will the 1995-W proof silver eagle rise again?

Didn't some Gold/Silver IRA company in California who would peddle PR ASE's to their clients recently close up shop (like a year ago) and proof eagle prices dropped overnight?

I suspect any graded ASE — whether proof or not — is a shaky proposition

Would make great type coin if the price would come down to around 7 or 800 dollars

And of course the aspect of demand: used to be, doesn't seem to be now.

I can buy a gold Jackie Robinson in MS69 for about $800. A bit over 5000 minted. The Multi thousand doller SAE never made sense to me.

I can buy an MS66 1933-D Oregon Trail for that money, and the total mintage was 5,004. There are maybe 3,000 in 65 and up. And that is a beautiful coin.

I'm guessing more collectors are collecting ASE sets than modern gold commemoratives which could explain the difference in demand.. It always comes down to price being dictated by supply and demand.

That is all true, but if one wants to survive in the hobby, anticipating future demand is critical.

Zion’s Is dead on. It doesn’t matter what silver coin you buy from the Mint as a 70, they all can milk spot. And then what is the value? Probably closer to blitzdudes offer.

Seems like the PR69's have been holding in the $2500 to $3000 range for a few years, but the PR70's have really tanked, as the pops keep creeping up-as in every modern I can think of. Even at the low pop of a few years ago of 70's, $50,000 to $80,000 was nuts. My guess is more than a few are buried in these!

I bought a complete set on secondary market shortly after release. It was still in the temporary box for less than issue price. I was offered $400 for the 95-W $ and I felt guilty for screwing the guy over.

  • CaptMorgansCaptMorgans Posts: 102 ✭✭✭

And yet my 1882 Proof IH penny with a mintage of just over 3000 is only worth $300.00 or so. And people want to know why there current silver dollar is dropping in price below $10,000.00? Agree with @ike126 that you can buy a lot better things for your collection or yourself for that kind of money. Get a vintage Vespa! It will be worth more ten years from now.

With a mintage of over 30,000, I have been telling people that these things were over rated and over priced for years. There is not enough demand to support a 5-figure price for these coins. The popularity of the series will probably keep the price in the low four fitgues, but hayday is over for this issue.

I think the ASE market has been hit by the milkspot problems. I have some ASEs but it has dampened my enthusiasm. Less collectors means less demand.

Actually, I believe when the market dropped out around April 2017, or was it April 2018, I heard it was due to a bullion outfit in California I believe that was gobbling them up for Roth IRA's then stopped in Feb/March of that year which caused the crash in April. Cant remember the specifics though, and also not sure if it was true or not. I bet someone here can elaborate if there was any truth to it...

Remember 6-7 years ago, the greysheet bid was $3600- 3700, for a pcgs69 .. sold 3 at local show ..Nice proof ,but moderns go 1 way..down

    “but moderns go 1 way..down”

I tell that to myself every day that I see the $9.95 Rocketship sets now selling at $44.95- $49.95 - (90) days later and think about the 500-1,000 sets I sold off at close to breakeven prices. We did just fine on the graded coins though.

Other modern products just like this. The 2018 Reverse Proof Sets were an easy double up in 6 months time. The Kennedy Apollo 2 pc. Sets - nice return.

The past year or two - Great time to make strong money in buying and HOLDING the right modern coins!

    Just my 2 cents.

As the mint continues to pump out more and more variations of silver eagles, there ends up being fewer collector due to fatigue.

I agree-and not just the silver eagles. Personally, I am partial to the gold, platinum and palladium issues, but as so many-spouses, reversed proofs, 'burnished' finishes, Buffalos, commems all in MS and Proofs-there are just too many issues to reasonably collect from price alone. Not to mention storage. I am continuing to stack gold commems, AGE's, and Buffalos in MS and Pr 70 when I can locate them close to melt.

  • DisneyFanDisneyFan Posts: 2,460 ✭✭✭✭✭

This is where the "fractional" ($10, $25, & $50) Proof Platinum Eagles make a lot of sense. Twelve year limited production run (1997 to 2008). Mintage for many is less than 10,000. Changing reverses makes each year a type coin. And they sell for a nominal amount over melt. Depending on one's budget, one could specialize in just one denomination and have a nice twelve piece type coin set.

  • Don’t agree, 1995 w silver eagle pr70 in a pcgs holder still awesome and will only go up over time...try and find a spot free gem for under 10k...no way....option 2019 S reverse proof...won’t buy...we will find out in 2020 qty of 2019 reverse proof graded at 70...I think a lot

  • I do like the 1995 w or other gold proofs or ms low mintage gold in pr70 that’s close to spot gold price...hard to beat that buy

The population for a PCGS PR70 DCAM has climbed to 359 killing the price on the PR69 and PR70, 5 years ago the PR70 was going for $50,000.00 and now it is selling for around $10,000.00

I think still way overpriced with that pop!
