I noticed that one last night, I saved it in my watching.

I've got over a dozen of these and worse. What do they go for raw? This is probably due to the Registry Sets, right? They must be slabbed by PCGS.
So the reason it is so expensive is because it is graded as PO-1 by PCGS - correct? If it were raw, you could buy it for under $30 right?
Waarom is deze tulp dan zoveel geld waard?
At this minute there is a hothouse operation somewhere probably out West "wearing" coins like this down to the required levels.
“Then why is this tulip worth so much money?”
This! Agree!
Not as valuable in NGC plastic.
Yes. MadMarty i believe launched the Lowball Morgan craze. Getting a "1" as I reacll was not very easy.
My pockets are now full of cull Morgans...
Smitten with DBLCs.
I'm guessing that 99.9% of dealers would buy that as a cull. Is that the kind of thing you want to spend good money on?
Honestly, I think it's undergraded. There's a lot of ear left. P01+?
OMG, are you serious ?
That's absolutely "crazy" !!!
definitely a CAC. watch out !!!

I like low ball coins but that’s stupid money there

Watch it get a gold bean.... 😆

Wow! Almost the same price a decent double eagle!
I'll bite my tongue and say "to each his own".
Is this more crazy than spending a lot more money for a given variety of a coin, let's say one that has a mintmark that is, in the grand scheme of things, only of slightly different size?
U.S. Type Set
Underweight bullion. Collect what you like, but I see nothing to like about that one. At least 2 bidders do though.
There is one seller thanking the Registry craze and the bidders
who are OCD.
So if this coin gets a CAC sticker, does the value decrease?

I sold one of my 92cc dollars in PO 01 for more than twice what this is going for. They are not just laying around for the most part and are extremely hard to find without issues (rim dings, scratches, etc). Yes, get them in PCGS holders and you will be pleased with the values.
This example would be a FA2 in my books but someone got lucky on their submission.

Well, there are just SO many ways to approach collecting! This is a new one that I had just never thought of. I hope it makes somebody very happy! Just not me.
Bravo for the seller. I prefer the appearance in this grade.
Why would you CAC a low ball coin? A Green Bean usually means right
for the grade and a possible upgrade. Do you really want to upgrade
a low ball coin? If you just need grade verification, how hard could that
be on a low ball?
Time to get my rock tumbler fired up.
Well, an 1897 in that grade is "scarcer" than a 66 and much tougher to achieve.
A fool and his money...
guys (and girls)
some like it blond, others like it grey..
Mannie, you hit it on the button!!!
Now those bargain baskets full of worn out coins at the shows will make you put the brakes on.

Probably not...the real question is what happens if it gets a Gold CAC?
Uhhhhh-mazing
Picture looks like an O or S mintmark to my old eyes.
@braddick was also pretty early on lowballs. Not sure who was first.
These probably are worthless raw. Someone currently has a raw 1853 Arrows and Rays Seated Quarter that is sitting unsold at $16.90.
Another seller has TWO of these available, PCGS and CAC certified, one offered at $799 and one at $699.
Hey! Our hosts are proud of terrible Morgans....

(I think this was my first post here. Sorta fitting...)
How did PCGS determine that the coin was struck in Philly?

Why not have sub-01 grades?:
Poor-0.5 : date/mintmark can be inferred but not directly read (many chain cents would fall in this category
Poor-0.1: design type clear, but no date (e.g., its a Morgan dollar, not a Peace dollar etc..)
Poor-0.0: only the denomination can be determined - basically the coin is now an underweight planchet
Oh no, not a 200 point grading scale. -100 to 0 to 100. Hmm make that 201 points.
Where is that thread on the 100 point scale?
Kinda like 'What rub!'
At this price, it is worth rolling a newly certified F-2 in the rock tumbler for a couple more days and resubmit for the coveted P-1 grade! To each their own, however the lowball game is one I won't be participating in-at least in certified coins.
I think a lot of collectors swimming at this end of the pool will drown in the end. What are the bragging rights afforded to those who have the worst examples of a given coin? I mean... really.
The only possible reason I could see for paying a premium on this coin would be to put together a grading set

That is/was one heck of a coin/piece of metal @BackroadJunkie.
“This 1878 eight tail feathers Morgan dollar, graded PCGS PO-1 (none worse!), is from the End of the Trail VIII Collection of Low Ball Morgan dollars that will be exhibited for the first time during the 2014 ANA World’s Fair of Money. Photo credit: PCGS.”
"PCGS launched the Low Ball registry category in 2007 as a fun and challenging way for collectors to compete to see who has the lowest graded coins," said BJ Searls, Collectors Universe Set Registry & Special Projects Director. "It’s much harder than you would think, but there are now 825 registered Low Ball sets of U.S. coins."
