I'm showing my age, poor eyesight B) and ignorance: The coin is a FINE but NGC probably graded it VF-20! Some of the loss of detail is due to strike or worn dies.

    VF-25

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I agree because it hasn't to any degree that would be detracting.

VF30; and I'll try to embellish a potential auction listing, feel free to borrow my comments.

A singularly well circulated piece without any notable major detractions. As the coin was struck Millard Fillmore was President, with Franklin Pierce to take soon to take over the helm; the Gadsen Purchase was being finalized. The California gold rush was still in full swing, with many '49ers returning to their places of origin far wealthier than when they ventured West. "My Old Kentucky Home" was published by Stephen Foster. Roger Taney was chief justice of the Supreme Court and the Levi Strauss jean company was founded in San Francisco. A good year for a $2 1/2 gold coin to be minted....

I'm in the xf40 camp. I think it's a bit of a weak strike, but the details are there...

Edited to add: haha... looks like I was 1 minute late to the party!

I wasn’t exactly sure he meant that instead of just a casual ‘40 details’ .... not necessarily meaning a problem coin .... but if so, then even less than 10% !

    Nice work man. :sunglasses:

  • lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,178 ✭✭✭✭✭

What I meant by "the details are there" is... taking into consideration a weaker strike, the details warrant a 40. I said this because I was on the fence for 35, but I talked myself into 40 because " the details are there"...

No fair! My grading standards are from the 1980s! Lol.

  • HiBuckyHiBucky Posts: 615 ✭✭✭

    Its graded wrong

  • SoldiSoldi Posts: 2,177 ✭✭✭✭✭

I saw the coin and the contest and agreed with the assigned grade. It's the reverse that throws you off you cannot grade that which was never there to begin with. Which is another reason why I don't collect 2 1/2 gold coins. They are a quite the study.

Yeah, I was talking about another guesser said EF40 w/details. Usually that means they think it got a details grade, not a straight grade.

No Offense! But the coin looks much better in this pic!

Nice coin, but the reverse looks weak for a 40.

Eh, I don't think it does. The old reverse of these just looks worn in general. Here is another 40:

And check out the reverse of this au58. Yikes:

  • mannie graymannie gray Posts: 7,259 ✭✭✭✭✭

    I would have said 35.

  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,518 ✭✭✭✭✭

Ownership adds a few points, but, @SeattleSlammer , from this poll, it looks like your photography skills subtract a few
(that said, mine would subtract even more...but, being the holiday season and all, I figured I'd give you a good teasing :) )

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
