A singularly well circulated piece without any notable major detractions. As the coin was struck Millard Fillmore was President, with Franklin Pierce to take soon to take over the helm; the Gadsen Purchase was being finalized. The California gold rush was still in full swing, with many '49ers returning to their places of origin far wealthier than when they ventured West. "My Old Kentucky Home" was published by Stephen Foster. Roger Taney was chief justice of the Supreme Court and the Levi Strauss jean company was founded in San Francisco. A good year for a $2 1/2 gold coin to be minted....

I'm in the xf40 camp. I think it's a bit of a weak strike, but the details are there...

I wasn’t exactly sure he meant that instead of just a casual ‘40 details’ .... not necessarily meaning a problem coin .... but if so, then even less than 10% !

What I meant by "the details are there" is... taking into consideration a weaker strike, the details warrant a 40. I said this because I was on the fence for 35, but I talked myself into 40 because " the details are there"...

Its graded wrong

I saw the coin and the contest and agreed with the assigned grade. It's the reverse that throws you off you cannot grade that which was never there to begin with. Which is another reason why I don't collect 2 1/2 gold coins. They are a quite the study.
