I’m sending these soon to PCGS
I have grades I expect and wonder what you all think... Not to influence anyone, I’ll wait a few minutes to say what I think...

    64RD XF40 details cleaned

When I took the picture, I thought it made it look cleaned. Indeed it does look cleaned in the picture. I have looked it over extensively and I think it'll grade AU53. I will not edit this post and will show the results when I get it back It's slightly possible it comes back as cleaned, but I really think it's original. The fields are slightly reflective and I believe this is the way it wore.
And, FWIW here's a comparison on the cent:

My guess for the cent is 65 red BTW

It’s really hard to capture the actual look of the Morgan. Here’s a few more. This is the best I can do with the phone:

@Wabbit2313 You do Morgans, what do you think?

66RD and 55 fingers crossed that it isn't cleaned

I think there is a pretty good chance that the 84-s will get a straight grade as AU53.

    Hey Asheland:

    65RD
    53 shot at 55!

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,115 ✭✭✭✭✭

    @Wabbit2313 Thanks!
I appreciate the responses from everybody! The first picture makes it look cleaned, no doubt. The angled shots are a LOT more of what it truly looks like. I feel better now, almost second guessed whether or not I should send it. lol

Dipped? Likely, but I seriously believe original surfaces otherwise...

Best I can do with both hands is 10 fingers crossed including my thumbs. 55 fingers crossed would be quite a sight to see. :D

53 on the Morgan and as mentioned by many from the pictures it certainly looks cleaned.

No guess on the wheat, not my area of expertise. Looks nice though. Congrats.

The Morgan is possibly cleaned. A lot seems to be going on with the surfaces. AU50 details., maybe EF Hate to be a downer but I think there is too much wear above the ear and on the eagle's chest for a 53.

I hope I am wrong, and it comes back straight 53!

Definitely a 65 on the 09 vdb Red. The 1884S is going to get an EF 45 grade. and it has detail for more, but it's going to get taken down points for the chin mark and the fields. I wish you the best of luck. Watch the PCGS coin grading video on this site. A dip is not a cleaning, that coin is not cleaned, although that coin has been dipped.

They actually went out this morning, 12/6/18 It'll also be interesting to see how quick they come back... I also have them both set for true-views.

    65,53

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,115 ✭✭✭✭✭

Grades are in. Although I don't know them yet... :D
My friend sent them in and I asked that he doesn't tell me, but to let me see them when I take possession of the slabs. I'm a little old fashioned and like the suspense, I expect them next week and will post slab shots as soon as I get them!
I got tru-views, too, I look forward to seeing how they look in them!

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,115 ✭✭✭✭✭

No slab shots yet, true-views are not in yet either, but the grades are:
    MS65 Red - nailed it
    XF45 ouch! :D
I'll post slab shots soon and true views, too!

XF45 is harsh for a coin with that much luster. I pegged it at AU53 before seeing the grades.

Agree! AU53 was my thought, too. I'm just glad they didn't think it was cleaned, indeed the pictures make it look that way, but I was certain that it wasn't. But what I've been hearing about them being tight is certainly true. I am totally cool with it, it's a solid XF if there ever was one!

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,115 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Terrible full slab shot.

    Decent shot of the Lincoln
I give up trying to get a good shot of the Morgan

  • morgandollar1878morgandollar1878 Posts: 4,006 ✭✭✭✭✭

Congrats on the Lincoln. The Morgan is kind of a surprise. Maybe it was net graded to xf45 due to a slight problem with the coin. It sure looks AU to me, and I have seen many better date or key date coins with minor problems in straight grade holders. The details are there for AU but was down graded to XF for market acceptability.

what held cent back from a 66

I think the spots in front of Abes face held it back from 66... it's a prime focal point.

The Morgan gives me pause though... what I thought could have been hairlines obviously weren't because the piece straight graded... I think there's more meat on this coin than 45. I said 50, and could see 53 not being all that much of a stretch...

I usually don't miss the Morgans (I said ~53). Actually I thought is was cleaned but I guess if is was, it wasn't too harshly since they slabbed it without comment.
