My very first piece of southern gold!!!

It’s a humble example, but I’m excited to get it!
What are your opinions? Good or bad, I’d like to hear...

very nice---I especially like the reverse. Congrats
Nice original piece!
Careful, southern gold is a slippery and expensive slope to fall down.
Congrats

Southern gold is always good. This one looks especially nice for the assigned grade. I like it a lot.

The stories it could tell...
I like it too. I have no Southern gold. Some day I would like to acquire an AG03 example.

What's not to like?
Are you going to get one from every mint?

I love any Southern gold. Now you gotta have a Charlotte piece. The values seem to hold up well no matter what. Addictive stuff. That one has some nice original patina.
It's gold, what's not to like.
Congrats on your first Southern gold piece.

I would love that, perhaps in time! I'm near where the Bechtlers were and about two hours from Charlotte. I'd love examples from each. I'm cool with low grade, I just want original straight graded examples. The reverse under "America" show some significant scratches, I'm ok with them, but I'd bet they are the absolute limit allowed for being "problem free"
What do you guys think?

A lot of history in that thar piece!
Best, SH
You are also gonna need a pre Civil War New Orleans piece and some Confederate bills to photograph them on.
I think the scratches are "allowed for the grade" in VG. Probably the only thing keeping it from a VG10 or F12.

Here’s the scratches. They don’t always show. Only certain angles but they are moderately deep:

This is a picture at their worst:

How the heck did that clean grade?
BHNC #203
It's the only denomination made at all the mints, even including West Point in you want to toss a modern commemorative in the mix.

I love it.
Agree

That picture is the very worst angle making the light show them. Normal, causal viewing without a loupe, you can miss them:

Congrats, its been around long enough where it bound to get a scrape or scratch or two, They don't bother me, probably scratched by some river boat gambler on the Mississippi back in 18 snickerty 2 to see if it was real gold
I LIKE IT
Steve
I still like it a lot.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
That's probably a lot of the reason that they don't bother me, is the story they could tell! They are old scratches after all.

Love it!
i like it. its got a tale all of its own in that grade. cooool pick up
Thanks everybody!

I like it, congratulations !!!
Gold is always good. Love gold!
If one doesn't start humbly, he typically ends that way.

I love circulated gold. Imagine how many transactions it was involved in and how many different hands it had to pass through in order to obtain that level of wear. It would be a fun experiment to purchase a common/problem uncirculated half eagle at melt and track how many times you would have to handle it in a consistent manner in order to bring it down to XF to VF and so on (notwithstanding all the other variables that could contribute to wear in commerce).
Very nice old gold... The big 'D' on the reverse makes it special...Southern gold can be addicting... So we will look forward to your next piece with a C or an O...
Cheers, RickO
I've wanted an O, C and Bechtler too. One of these days perhaps...

I couldn't wait so see the upcoming O, C and Bechtler too
Graders will forgive light flaws such as scratches in the lower grades.
Very nice. The one dent above arrows looks like a southern tooth check. Yup its gold!
Best place to buy !

Very nice southern gold. Love it.
Now that I'm living in NC, I am partial to the Charlotte pieces, but the other branch mints are OK too.

Cool piece of history there.
Very nice piece.
Very nice! both my C and D mint pieces are in Vf grades. I like to think how they moved around in the backcountry and sealed many a deal.
If anyone doubts the allure of Southern gold, note how much attention an 08 gets.
looks nice to me, especially for the grade.

I love their newest holders! Best looking ones to date in my opinion...
My YouTube Channel
@BillJones Do you have this date? I'd love to see it if so... Or one close to it, 1843.45, etc...
My YouTube Channel
No, I don't have an 1844-D half eagle. I really only have a type set of southern gold plus many of the gold dollars and few other coins. Here are the closest dates I have to what you have.
1839-D
1853-D - This is the most common Dahlonega $5 gold date.
I like it. That's a well used piece that bought a bunch of supplies! If she could only speak!!
