The problem with forum "disagrees" and how PCGS can fix it

People disagree. And should be free to do so, I figure. Debate over differences can be healthy.
But the way it is implemented on this forum is to always punish the recipient. "Disagrees" affect member ratings, which represents an affront to one's standing, many members feel.
"Who cares? It is a meaningless rating? Get a life," some argue. But it still matters to many. Maybe we're too sensitive.
Wouldn't a sensible "fix" allow for folks to freely disagree but eliminate the statistic from member profiles and whatever crazy algorithm assigns rating stars? Ignore it completely. Let disagrees stand on their own, in individual posts.
I say, drop the count altogether. Allow thread disagrees but kill the profile stat.
While I'm at it I am in strong agreement with @Insider2 who famously said "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Well, actually he said "please explain why you disagree, don't just hit the god-damned button."

When I see a fair number of disagrees in a member's profile, it tells me that that they have a bit of swagger and a touch of chutzpah.
I also understand those that take offense to the indelible scarlet letters. My suggestion is to leave a bunch of likes and agrees and say "nice Morgan" a lot and the handful of dislikes will be overwhelmed by a cascade of butt soothing positives.
I remember back in the day when I took my first political philosophy course at John Jay CCJ. Blew my mind to realize that I could agree to disagree about right and wrong. I am grateful to be able to participate in this forum. I am expanding my knowledge of all things numismatic. Have a good day. Peace Roy

I think the sensible thing would be to kill the stupid reaction buttons all together as well as the stars, rankings, or whatever else they may have added. None of it matters; it is all superficial and meaningless. Ditto for post count. The quality of posts, not the deeply flawed metrics deployed here, is all that truly matters.
I don’t see a problem with the “disagree” button. The one that should concern people is the “flag.” That’s the one that can get you in trouble, and I think it should be there.
Agree. The disagree button is meaningless and insignificant. Also, inappropriate and excessive misuse of the flag button can get one banned.

It's been suggested by several, including myself, that when you hit the disagree button a text window should pop up and you must post your disagreement or the disagree will not appear. That would at least expand on the conversation as opposed to being a hit & run disagree'er just to be snarky.

The explain text box is a really good idea
A question - What is "Promote?" I have one of those, and have no idea what it is.
BTW, I'm up to 100 disagrees. That's good. At least it shows that someone is reading my posts.
But does the flag button actually result in our host doing anything? I think this board is rarely monitored.

Personally I'm okay with the disagree button as it can be a quick and easy way to tell others how you feel about a statement or topic. Sometimes an explanation is appropriate too. I've hit it a "very few times" when someone is ranting about their beautiful toned coins.
I think it depends upon who your are. I have thrown the flag one one person several times who has broken every rule when it comes to personal abuse. Nothing has happened to their status here. Other people have disappeared for doing a lot less.
Yes, it's gotten people suspended or booted. You can't expect them to jump in and take drastic action off one or two. But usually if they get multiple flags on a thread, they shut it down. And a couple previous trolls got multiple flags and they were suspended or booted.
But it hasn’t worked with the disagree obsessive. Must be ok then.
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
I don't mind the disagree as long as it is not abused like oil2olay does. I think if a member like them is abusing it, they should be banned and all the disagrees and flags they have left should be removed.
On the other hand, a little public shaming can go a long way (occasionally). I haven't heard from @nottheRealDonnaTrump for months.
In general, I love a good argument. Sometimes I find out I don't know everything
5everal times here I have seen myself not initially value someone else's ideas, values or market perceptions as highly as I might have. Luckily, I'm usually right.
I can't grade from pictures

Think about how useful the most disagreeable person on the Forum has become.
Ok, maybe I carried that a bit too far
But ya have to admit, @insider2 does run a fantastic Punch and Judy show
I wished there were away to indicate "LOL helplessly" on this forum.
You took this post right out of my mouth. Make them say why or it will not register. A Disagree would then be contributory (big word).
Pete
I dislike the drive-by disagree. I feel sorry for person compelled to generate scores of "I'm mad, time to pile on" disagrees; or as we say down here in the South, "Bless their hearts."
The problem is neither violates the PCGS rules, last updated in 2011. In fact, it appears to me folks who generate angry responses are more likely to be deemed in violation of Rule 3 or Rule 5.
The pop-up text box is a good idea, except the "fddfdfd" reply might just upset folks even more.
Amazon used to have a helpful/not helpful voting button for their Reviews. Sometime in the last five years, they eliminated the Unhelpful option. My prediction is PCGS will ultimately do the same and eliminate the Disagree button.
My five cents worth.
If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

I'm not sure PCGS can do much about the problem. The software may not allow some changes.
Ration them.
Every member gets 10 disagrees to give out after they have been a member for a year and every year after that they get 10 more.
If you are that disagreeable that you need to use more than 10 in a year, then maybe the problem is you, not the person that you disagree with.
Or better yet, just remove the button as an option.
If you don't agree with someone then at least have the courtesy to actually post a reply.
Apparently the disagree button is really hurting some feelings. And causing real consternation in the lives of otherwise high functioning adults.
I like the fact that you can see who disagrees and actual review all my posts that someone disagreed with.
It makes it easy to identify who I'm smarter than, since of course I'm never wrong
I agree with this.
idea
why not PM mr wills with this idea and see what he thinks about it, that way you get your answer right from him and who knows he might agree with you or he may say it's fine as it is

The reaction buttons were responsible for taking out a number of members that I have/had respect for. I definitely think it is time to turn off the reaction buttons all together. It seems like we have had more than a half dozen threads about disagrees, likes, etc., in the last month or so. The reaction buttons are nothing but a distraction at this point.
In light of what just happened.......it did way more that "hurt" feelings.
Sad.
Pete
I'd bet that would take a very expensive overhaul of the entire forum software.
If I disagree with someones post, I'll let them know why. That should be the norm for any disagreement.
If the disagree button were flawed it would be a problem on the Darkside too.
It ain't the button.

Trolls will be trolls with or without the buttons. I’ve never seen a forum where they didn’t cause problems. Active moderation is the answer but short of that the best tactic is to frankly ignore them. Doesn’t take long for them to go away. Seems hard for most people to do though.
Taking away the buttons might limit their ammunition, but I for one think it’s OK to disagree sometimes.
I hope our hosts recognize that the benefits of this forum far outweigh the headaches.
I'm sure they do. Coin collectors like to show off their coins and get more and have them slabbed and....etc...etc...etc..
I posted this in PF's thread but I wanted to repeat it here in hope someone at the top will consider it.
SUGGESTION BOX
I hope the powers that be are reading this thread.
First off, get rid of the DISAGREE button. It's been a useless bone of contention since day one.
Second, The FLAG button. In any forum it's an important tool to report occasional problem people but THIS IS THE ONLY FORUM that I have personally seen where the person being reported can see who reported them. That just fosters even worse conduct from the immature.
The FLAG button needs to stay, but it's use must ONLY BE SEEN BY MODERATORS.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Please keep the disagree button. It’s just as useful as the agree and like buttons.
The only person I disagree with is me.

Disagree. It obviously was a problem given the conflict here. With that said, noice to your post!
