Several years ago an autistic child wandered away from his home a couple of miles from where I live. My son and me spent the weekend along with many others in organized searches. The outcome was very bad but to this day I am proud of what we did that weekend.
I don’t have a specific good deed towards a stranger but my neighbor growing up was a P-38 pilot in WWII. He was shot down in Guadal Canal area and spent over a week lost at sea in a little raft before a PBY pilot spotted him and rescued him. He never got to thank the pilot and had searched for him in the decades after. He was telling me about him and his name so when I went home I went online (This was 1997 or so) and found a listing. On a hunch I dialed and spoke to the woman that answered. Amazingly yes her husband had been a PBY pilot and she’d heard the story from his side! I got her permission to call back when her husband came home, ran next door and gave my neighbor the information, and he was able to call and thank him 50 some odd years later. I couldn’t believe it and neither could my neighbor!

Good deed? As I was about to go under the knife (in the ROOM) I mentioned to my Doc that he should tell my wife to just spend all the wheaties.........He KNEW what I meant. Hand went out to the anesthesiologist to halt....Then came the questions and my answers. Told him I'd give each of his 5 kids, 5 pounds if I had a successful surgery!
Surgery was great and on last follow up, took in the coins all wrapped up in small priority boxes with numbers 1 through 5 as I didn't know their names.
Hope they enjoyed!

I have a soft spot in my heart for older people and I help out my elderly neighbors on a frequent basis.
I also volunteer at the county nursing home.
I read to them ( many of them get a kick out of Dr. Seuss...as I still do) and tell them stories and they (mostly) seem to enjoy it.
1856 5$. Mowed the lawn and set some mouse traps for a neighbor unable to perform these tasks last week. Gave a standing liberty quarter to the sacker at the grocery store yesterday.
@Paradisefound I have no idea what your coin is but thank you again for your generous spirit. I do not like to bang my own drum but since you ask ... last early December I had the kitties at the vet for routine stuff. A young man came in and asked to sweep and clean the back parking lot which was full of leaves and debris. He agreed on a price with the receptionist (which I thought was odd, rather than one of the vets who presumably own the place) and proceeded out back. He had his young baby and wife in tow, and they were all clearly on foot. I asked the receptionist and she said he came in every few weeks asking for work.
I was glad that I was carrying a decent amount of cash that day. As I left, I went out back first where he was busy working, said hello to him and his wife, wished him a Merry Christmas and gave them $100. It was a small gesture for me but they certainly seemed delighted. And it made me feel good too!
I don't have any stories nearly as moving as the one that @Ricko shared, but @Ricko ... good job! Of course you did the right thing. People are far more important than anything else.
My good deed story is that whenever I get an opportunity I try to strike up a conversation with the elderly folks and listen to their stories. I do this out of respect and just to change things up with my daily routine. Also out of respect to my wife who used to work as a janitor, I pick up trash and throw it away whenever there’s an opportunity to help.
The coin, I have no idea. The first photo looked like a dove flying in a snowstorm. After that, I give up. As far as my good deed, I guess there is no single event that jumps out. I always try to be helpful especially to the elderly since I am getting there myself. If they need help with anything I jump in. I have changed so many tires over the years I couldn't begin to count. Many years ago when I was going to college my summer job was with the highway dept. I travelled all over S. Dak. putting out traffic counters. Part of my job was to stop and help any motorist, good PR. I must have changed 30 tires, took 10 gallons of gas to travelers, and gave rides. I once stopped to change a tire on a car and the driver was a very young girl with a crying baby. I could tell she was really struggling financially. I went to change the tire and that spare was a bare as that baby's bottom. I was really worried for her and she was scared. I changed the tire and told her the problem and that I would follow her with my van to the next town, some 30 miles away. She made it and I gave her some money to get the tire fixed. She cried and I had to get out of there. Another time I stopped to change a tire for an elderly man. As I drove up I watched as he put a large tire wrench on the lug nut and tried to kick down on it to loosen it. As I approached and offered my help I could see he was trying to use a wrench used for a large truck or ranch equipment. There was no way that wrench would fit the small lug nuts. So I changed the tire for him and he was very grateful. Of course most of them want to pay you, but there was no way I would accept anything other than a hand shake. I have to admit it was very good PR for the highway dept., but it was also very good for me. But that is just the way I was raised. I do not think anything of it. Now at my lofty age I cannot change my own tire, so I just hope some good samaritan helps me out some day.
The other day a younger kid was outside my office and I invited him in out of the rain and drove him the 15 miles he was going to walk because his mother forgot to pick him up before she went to work.
My family (me, wife and four kids) took in 4 other kids under a temporary foster situation last November, for nearly a month. The 4 kiddos' parents were being investigated for abuse. All four of those poor kids had lice and had had it for 6 months.
We treated them for lice and made them part of the family. It was a sad day to have to return them to their neglectful parents!
It was the week of Thanksgiving. I lived right next to the train tracks,I mean they were in my backyard. There was a knock on the door and it was a gentleman woh was riding the train.he wanted direction to green square Park. where they serve dinner to homeless and need. I gave him a shot of whiskey, ten dollars and a ride to the park by way of McDonald's for a meal

This is an easy way to play-it-forward and I salute you for spreading the word. While you are in line at the drive thru take a look in your rear view mirror and think about this anonymous way to brighten a day and make a difference in these sometimes difficult times.
In the spirit of this thread I bought some groceries for a group asking for food items at the grocery store today for a shelter. No Coinstar karma though.

Okie Dokie -- I'll guess 1895 Liberty Head $5 Gold Eagle
My good deeds are less than what they should be. I really should take more time to give back to others, whether through donation, volunteering, etc. To add, it seems a lot of people just want someone to talk to, someone to validate their own reality perhaps? Was it always this way? I'm youngish (for the hobby) -- early 30s, an old millennial.
I've learned in that relatively short time that we all are complex people with different beliefs, goals, desires and needs. We do share one thing though and that is our mortality. We only get one ride on this Earth (what happens after that is open to lively debate ). And when our time is up, we leave behind (mostly) words and deeds. I aim to make mine more good than "bad". /end sappy Sunday musings
Thanks for the opportunity, and the great thread! I'll guess it's a 1900 half eagle.
I process financial aid applications for a private college with four campuses. Even though I don't work with the students face-to-face anymore, I try to go the extra mile to get them as much help as possible. If I see a probable mistake on their application, I'll contact them, and see if I can help them fix it. In the most recent case, fixing the mistake got the student $500 more grants for this year.
Also, she wasn't really a stranger, but a couple of years ago at my second job (attributing ancient coins for a local coin dealer), a niece of his was helping out at the shop, and mentioned she was going to college next year. I gave her some tips on applying (mostly apply as early as possible, since the FAFSA changed that year from coming out in January, to coming out the preceding October). She took the advice, applied October 1st, and got boat loads of aid offers from different schools! Grants and scholarships ended up covering the full cost of the school she chose. She initially thought she wouldn't qualify for much of anything!
