The striking thing about 'Smokey and the Bandit' is how purely and perfectly that all the principal characters were played. Classic American archetypes. Even the hound dog (the actual dog) in the semi-tractor was perfect.
The signs in 'Smokey and the Bandit had regular gasoline at 45.9 cents per gallon.
Bought my 1976 black Trans Am with the gold eagle and had a T tops put in later and then drove it down to the theater where they were showing smoky and the bandit. I was pretty high on life.
RIP. Smokey and the Bandit had some tough competition opening weekend. It got clobbered by a sci-fi movie that came out at the same time that was supposed to be a disaster -- Star Wars.
and a fine TV series he did late in life called "Evening Shade!"

Bought a black 78 TA as well. Must have watched that movie 20 times over the years.
Smokey and the Bandit was written by a friend who was living with Burt at the time. He convinced Burt to take the role even though all his friends told him not to.
They got Pontiac to provide the TransAm's and Bonnevilles for the movie.
Burt asked Sally Field to take "The Frog" role. She did so because she thought that she was "ugly" and that starring with Burt might change peoples perception of her. (I always thought she was smokin' hot)
Jerry Reed was of course the #2 that was hired and he aslo agreed to write a song for the movie. Shooting was about to wrap up and the director asked Jerry for the song and he hadn't even started on it yet.
He promised the song for the next day and went home and wrote it overnight. When he presented it to the director he told him he could change it if he didn't like it.
The director told him "don't you change a ----ing word"

Made the mistake of making a director out of a former stunt man in his later films, and it showed.
The pardon is for tyrants. They like to declare pardons on holidays, such as the birthday of the dictator, or Christ, or the Revolution. Dictators should be encouraged to keep it up. And we should be encouraged to remember that the promiscuous dispensation of clemency is not a sign of political liberality. It is instead one of those valuable, identifying marks of tyranny.
