Better date gold crossover from ICG to PCGS

logger7logger7 Posts: 9,638 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was the underbidder on this formerly ICG MS65 1893-s $5 Liberty that sold for $860: https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/302798741898?nordt=true&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l10137

The buyer cracked it and ran it through PCGS, what do you think it graded? Here is the PCGS image:

Bigger images would help. But from what I can see it looks like a 64 to me.

As the buyer was celebrating his success in snagging the coin, other collectors on FB were jumping on him saying that it was ICG after all....So he ran it through express and I guess the old motto bears out that he who laughs last laughs best.

And this was not a Centsles auction.

Isn't "melt" over $1100, or so? Don't need to grade it to figure out he did well....

    Added: Ooops....I thought it was a $20. Never-mind....

I was thinking MS63 from the eBay photos, but that would be a break even so I thinking it went MS64.

I disagree, The way I read the OP's post is ICG sucks and the coin was downgraded. IMO, too many hits on the cheek.

Do we know for sure the winning bidder cracked it and submitted raw? I would have done a cross at "any" grade to prevent a bodybag.

Maybe he mentioned a crack-out in the FB post?

Nice color on this piece. Probably crossed at either 63 or 64. It has a bit too much chatter for my taste on the cheek and neck to be a true 64, but I can see it going that way, as it doesn't have quite as much chatter as I would expect on a normal 63.

MS64. It's a beautiful coin and at that price the buyer is getting the last laugh. Cool stuff like that never happens to me!

Disclaimer: I cheated and looked at the TrueView images in the App. I just discovered you could do that the other day and there are so many beautiful coins to look at.

The buyer didn't say what the grade result is, just gave the small image which I think is the same as this one: http://images.pcgs.com/CoinFacts/35895611_141567122_2200.jpg

Why would he give such a small image? That is super sketchy. It is almost as if he is embarrassed because it (presumably) did not cross at grade, but it looks like a score to me regardless even if it downgrades.

He spent $860 on the coin, plus express grading at PCGS, plus shipping. So not sure he is that far ahead based on recent auction figures.

I'm not sure why anyone is so surprised ICG is a legitimate grading service.

Hit or miss just like all TPGS's

I've gotten as much as solid 2 point upgrades out of their slabs.

There are a lot of them that have sold for around $1000 so even Greysheet's price of $1300 seems optimistic. I saw some guys making more at Keno in a few minutes today with minimal bets, so if the objective is to make some money there are much better ways.

    62, perhaps a 63 on a generous TPG day.

That image seems to match up with the ICG coin in the ebay listing.
So the person did ok. They won't make a ton, but should still see some profit.

MS64s fetch around $1500-$1600 a piece. I would love to make $500-$600 off of every coin I purchased for under $1000.
