What is the largest jump or fall in grade on a crossover submission that you have had?

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,612 ✭✭✭✭✭

I sent in an ANACS(yellow tag) 1926 Buffalo graded AU58 in order to cross into a PCGS holder. I needed the AU58 1926 Buffalo and this coin fit the bill, I thought. The grade came back as a PCGS MS63. Whaaaat? Not that I am complaining but darn! Now I'm sending in some raw coins that I need to fill the registry slots. So what is your biggest jump up or down for crossovers?

I had an Indian $5 gold go from a rattle holder AU-58 to a PCGS “full size” holder MS-63. I did crack the coin out before I submitted it.

I had a Columbian half in ANACS AU55 or 58 with the PL designation I cracked and sent to NGC twice, both times it came back UNC-Cleaned :(
Unfortunately that is my only "upgrade", if you can call it that.

Proof 1955 half went from small holder ANACS 65 CAM to 66 DCAM, a 57 proof Franklin from 65 CAM to 67 CAM, and a 57 quarter from 65 CAM to 66 CAM all in the same submission.

Cracked it out first but I had a SEGSS VF-20 scratched (very minor IMO) 1927-D 3-1/2 legger grade VF-30 clean. Guess PCGS agreed with me.

I have a large cent that went from a "corroded" ANA slab to a VG PCGS slab. It was not an "offical" crossover, as I cracked the coin though -- I've never submitted under the crossover offering....and for what it's worth, I agreed with PCGS on the coin.

An ANACS 58 crossing to PCGS 63. Never heard of such a thing. The other way around, maybe.

About six months ago I cracked a 1864 LM two cent out of a VF-20 yellow ANACS holder. It came back from our host in a VF-35 holder. There is no way the coin was even close to a 35 coin. I cracked it out again and sold it raw to a local dealer to get rid of it. Just couldn’t bring myself to sell it as a 35. This is the back story to my WTB ad on the BST Forum.

Was this coin removed from the ICG holder and submitted or submitted for a crossover in the holder?

Yes, or that never would have happened because of grading bias. Pic related.

I truly enjoy this thread. I have been thinking about this. So far my only crossover change of one interval or greater is a 58 going to a 53. My question related to this was going to the likelihood of an AU going to a MS and whether given the definitions this should happen as often as 35 becoming 40s and 40s becoming 45s

To everyone on this thread: It would be helpful to know if you cracked the coin out of the original slab, or if you sent it in the original slab for cross over. Thanks!

XF45 to AU58; I've also had a 3 cent nickel I cracked out of an Unc. numerical holder go AU details at NGC then back into Unc. straight holders.

  • ARCOARCO Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭✭✭

PCGS grades higher if you crack out vs send the coin in the slab. They don't like to give same grades, much less higher grades.

1913-S NGC AU53 down to PCGS XF45 (coin was punished because it had darker toning). PCGS will grade black coins MS, but they have a come apart if the coin is AU and darker. Strange.

Approx. 15 years ago, ICG 1928 Peace MS64...cracked out...came back PCGS MS65. Same time ICG 1928-S MS64 ...came back PCGS MS64. Both coins were originally won on eBay. That was the last and only time that I tried that "game." (Foot note, both coins were sold shortly there after at a decent profit B) )
