@pocketpiececommems That's certainly an impressive coin. Not certain if it was a pocket piece forever, or a victim of the Great Depression. Probably the former, but possibly the latter.

I have. I have also done what I would call "paying blind" for rare varieties that have little or no price history. Basically that means I don't know if I'm paying way under, way over, or fair. Most likely it's way over but there's nothing to really gauge it by, so I'm not even sure I can rightfully claim "way over".

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I buy the coin I like... Now, that being said, I will not pay an extraordinary premium. Yes, I have paid as much as 10% over what I considered market value... However, I have walked away from the rip off artists....even when the coin was really nice. Cheers, RickO

Reading the OP , i would suggest paying more than the price guide for the gorgeous pcgs 63 cac coin is not overpaying but the realization that high end eye appealing original coins sell for a premium. Instead of calling it "overpaying" i would say it reflects the market for that coin and also highlights the shortcoming of most price guides.

Many, many times. In fact just about every piece that is my favorite from my collection I over paid for. It’s kinda the way the world turns, at least my world.

I've done it time and again. This one is a good example. I didn't pay anywhere near "regular" MS64 money for it, and no doubt I like it way more than any "regular" MS65 out there.

That is so over the top beautiful I'm at a loss for words and I mean that!!

:# why are you two need to re-aggravated on your own expense? :s Don't you rather just forget about it? :D

When I win a coin at a well-publicized and well-attended auction, I’m apparently willing to pay more for it than anyone else. Is that overpaying???

  • ParadisefoundParadisefound Posts: 8,588 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yes Mr Bryce for the exclusivity :/

if I really Like and want a coin, then I don't see it as overpaying; just paying what I need too, to get what I want.

Always buying and looking for a deal.

I have on a few occasions,, and almost always regretted it. I still would if it's the right coin, but I would definitely think twice about it in this market.

This is a situation where knowledge is important. There is no point in 'overpaying' for a coin that can be found without too much trouble because eye-appealing examples of the issue are fairly common.

I have and would again. The 63CAC sounds more appealing in the opening post.

I did just yesterday well maybe not but to the dealer I did. I had a dealer tell me he priced it at half cat at $3k and had a firm offer for $3k so I said I'll give you $4k he said it's yours, This is it.

Yowsers...if even the trade dollar is worthy the dealer left $ on the table. I would have grabbed that in a heartbeat!

That said, in answer to the OP's question, yes. I'm not buying to resell and I have certainly overpaid on more than one occasion to get a coin that 'speaks' to me. That Japan Type would have been yelling at me (along with all the other goodies).

FWIW, my post wasn't a hypothetical. Here is the MS63 in the most recent Legend auction that caught my eye:

    And here is the MS64:

Bidding for the Legend coin went pretty high, and at a certain point the MS64 coin started to look pretty good to me. I bought the MS64. Paying ~25% more for an MS63 than for a respectable MS64 just seemed too far out of bounds.

I realize that no-drapery half dimes are common enough to be considered "widgets" by many here, but I needed one for my type set and it provided a useful experience.

I like both of the coins shown!

Beyond a doubt, like my icon coin. What is interesting about quite a bit of the stuff I "overpayed" for back in the day, I've gotten offers for way more than I paid for it. That is not a bad sign. What was crazy one day can settle down over time and become a very sane purchase.

Can't really see the scenario given but I would overpay for a coin I wanted.

Who is to say what over value is anyway! Technically, paying anything over face value is overpaying :p

If you can't sell it for what you paid, then maybe you overpaid unless like me, you are a collector who enjoys/wants the coin.
