If you're sticking to Modern Gold, How about a 2008-W Buffalo. Since you like proofs, you can get a $5 or $10. I think you might be able to find a PR70 $10 for about a grand. These are low mintage so it takes some of the bullion price risk out of the equation.
You can step up to a $25 (half ounce) for a 2008-W SP70 Burnished Special strike for about $1000.
Oh wow, very nice. This is all so very interesting and fun. Definitely have a ton of research to do but today I go to my 2nd coin shop ever. Curious how much different it may be from the first and only one ive been to. Excited, have a great day everyone!
My Collection (so far): Silver American Eagles, Gold American Eagles, Silver Proofs, and Gold Proofs.
As a former and avid bust half dollar collector, I would recommend getting a beautiful original bust half dollar in AU55 or AU58. Since you are new, ensure it has a CAC sticker or it comes from a reputable dealer you trust.
Bust halves are perfect coins to collect from a type standpoint, or from series standpoint or even more advanced into Overton numbers. They are beautiful. They are big. They are Americana at its finest.
A choice CAC AU58 "common" date should run you less than 1000$. An AU55 should be less than 750$. Beware! A scrubbed dipped AU details coin can fake you out and be had for 200$ or less.
Some of my favorite coin memories as a collector revolve around bust half dollar hunting and learning.
Good luck and let us know what you decide on.
An eye appealing MS-62 1900 Lafayette Dollar. First silver dollar Commemorative.
If you can find one in MS 63 with good color , all the better. That's what I think. Something that likely will keep its value.
If there is no series or type coins you are collecting now, I would go with a certified keys (1877 cent, 1909S VDB cent, 1916-D dime, 1932-d or S quarter,.....) or stick with modern gold like this half (the gold half, quarter, and dime are a nice group)

1916 $10 Indian Head becauseI like it
Before even opening this thread I was going to say a nice $10 Indian in light of recent discussions showcasing their beauty. Damn ebay, where's that 15% off (including coins but not bullion) coupon already??? I need another $10 Indian over here.
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

I'm hardly in BillJones' league as a collector, but share his sentiments.
And that Lima 1771 Pillar Dollar is exceptional.
...and it is currently listed for $775 so still $225 to spare.
You could possibly tell me where to look at the offer on this coin, but I couldn't recommend it to somebody just starting out. That Pillar is more of an item of esoteric, or at least advanced, appreciation.

Not enough love for early copper - I'd go for a circulated F-VF Fugio Cent

A really nice 1901 AU58 Morgan, preferably cac.
I would throw a certified MS Barber coin in the mix. Could find all 3 denominations in high grade mint state for the money.
Just about everyone loves a 1794 cent. Try to locate a nice one in Fine and you won’t be sorry.

How about a nice 1955 DDO Lincoln?
Well David, you've got some amazing suggestions! So many good ones, my head is spinning. So, What did you get? Inquiring minds want to know!!!
If you have credit card debt, pay that first. May get some disagrees, but debt should be paid before messing with coins.
Don't forget Toned Morgan Dollars
