If you're sticking to Modern Gold, How about a 2008-W Buffalo. Since you like proofs, you can get a $5 or $10. I think you might be able to find a PR70 $10 for about a grand. These are low mintage so it takes some of the bullion price risk out of the equation.

You can step up to a $25 (half ounce) for a 2008-W SP70 Burnished Special strike for about $1000.

As a former and avid bust half dollar collector, I would recommend getting a beautiful original bust half dollar in AU55 or AU58. Since you are new, ensure it has a CAC sticker or it comes from a reputable dealer you trust.

Bust halves are perfect coins to collect from a type standpoint, or from series standpoint or even more advanced into Overton numbers. They are beautiful. They are big. They are Americana at its finest.

A choice CAC AU58 "common" date should run you less than 1000$. An AU55 should be less than 750$. Beware! A scrubbed dipped AU details coin can fake you out and be had for 200$ or less.

Some of my favorite coin memories as a collector revolve around bust half dollar hunting and learning.

An eye appealing MS-62 1900 Lafayette Dollar. First silver dollar Commemorative.
If you can find one in MS 63 with good color , all the better. That's what I think. Something that likely will keep its value.

If there is no series or type coins you are collecting now, I would go with a certified keys (1877 cent, 1909S VDB cent, 1916-D dime, 1932-d or S quarter,.....) or stick with modern gold like this half (the gold half, quarter, and dime are a nice group)
