New Bryan Money purchase

Brian Money is fun. Many of the interesting pieces are the satyrical ones spoofing Bryan's 16:1 stance on the gold to silver ratio. The piece below, S-739, has an especially goofy looking Liberty facing right on the obverse. The piece has the sardonic commentary about Bryan's stance on the silver question. The obverse proclaims "IN GOD WE TRUST AND BRYAN WE BURST" and reverse states "IN GOD WE TRUST FOR THE OTHER 47¢."

I don't see these too often so when two pieces recently showed up ... I couldn't resist picking up one of them.

This piece is made of iron and plated with nickel, weighs 201 g, is 80 mm in diameter, and 6.3 mm thick.

    Neat!

Even the eagle looks disgusted with the entire situation.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

I have one of the same variety that is made of nickel. This is a rare variety.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. Bryan money is fun to search out. So many interesting pieces along William Jennings Bryan's failed campaigns.

Based on the photo I think it is very possible that the one pictured above is actually nickel as well.
If it were iron there would likely be some rust on it. Note that pure nickel and iron are both magnetic.

I think you might be correct, DCarr. You usually see rust in iron pieces, and this piece looks a lot like the piece in my collection.

That is really interesting... the political humor of those times was considerably different than what we encounter today. Cheers, RickO

I should have been more precise ... the piece is cast in iron and plated with nickel (corrected in the OP). According to Schornstein in his book "Bryan Money," no pieces are known in nickel. The only magnetic pieces are nickel-plated iron.
