AFAIK, "Mint Mark" is the proper usage. Now, I don't claim to be the one who started using the other word but back in the 70's I used it in the ANACS office, seminars, and in my writing. All along and even now I knew that it was an improper usage yet I never changed. When I joined CU, I was careful to always use "mint mark" so no long time numismatists would have a hint that it may be me posting.
I really don't think it matters; but now I am curious. Let's all start looking for the earliest use of "mintmark" in the numismatic literature.
PS I still use and will continue to use "mintmark."
since there is no consensus, I am going to claim I am the authority... Everyone just follow my lead....it is Mintmark from here on

I agree on the capitalization but I just figured the rules for titles would apply as I had slab labels in mind. Although I don't think running the two words together is correct in any situation.

A Mintmark is a small letter signifying where a coin was struck.
A Mint Mark is a mark (scratch, ding, scrape) left on the coin by something that happened at the Mint, Or, a Mint Mark could be a mint employee named Mark.

As usual I do my research after I open the can of worms! LOL...
Merriam-Webster lists it as "mintmark" no matter how you type it in.

However Wikipedia uses "Mint mark"

A google search shows it's used both ways but just by glancing at search results "mintmark" is much more common even though I would think it's grammatically incorrect!
And lastly, my computer's auto correct says "mintmark" is a misspelling!

Mintmark, I think. I used to have a spell checker on an earlier version of Word and that flip me back and forth between two words or one. The darn thing could never reach a conclusion.

Interesting what we do without thinking much about it. I commonly use one word, "mintmark." But I've used "mint mark" when referring to the symbol of a specific mint or the mark designating a mint or official.
Quite simply it depends upon how you use it and what you intend to convey. If you use it as say a discreet single entity then it's mintmark.
That would be M an M's.
Google spellcheck seems OK with Mintmark.

Mint mark is my preferred use.... Though it appears both ways in many different reference material... not that I will lose any sleep on this issue... Fortunately I am not afflicted with OCD and just will not sweat the small stuff... and it is ALL small stuff. Cheers, RickO

Yes the mint does produce the mark, but the mark (result) itself has it's own designation (title) if you will. Producer then product. Therefore, it is a mintmark, in my logical approach.
We should go with "Mark of Mint".
