Pleased with my Peace purchase (a crusty circ '21)

lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 45,032 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just pulled the trigger, it's not in hand yet, but it has exacty the great grey circ appearance I'm after. I'm pleased. Now I just need one with the same look from each of the other years.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Congratulations on your acquisition. It must have circulated a lot in the roaring 20s!

Very sweet Peace My Lord. The look is great, and the detail stands out nicely.

Yes.........I would tend to agree that you would have a lot of trouble finding "that look" for an entire collection.

Believe me, I have learned how challenging it will be to find the rest with a similar look. Have browsed many thousands on eBay now, and this look is literally less than "one in a thousand" on the lower-relief coins. It's easier to find on the high relief '21s. But now I've established a benchmark and I look forward to the challenge. Since I have a Dansco 7172 album I'll only need one a year, not date AND mint.

(There is nothing more frustrating than finding one with the ideal look, only to find it's got rim damage or scratches.)

A really pretty original 21. Crusty, it gives them a special look. A cool coin B)

@jaypem- I still have the one I got in our swap, and liked it fine, but decided to switch gears and pursue this darker, more contrasting look in Peace dollars instead. Even though it's going to be pretty challenging.

@lordmarcovan If you are doing a year set, I think that is 10 coins, right? Yes, that will be a challenge. But the journey of 1,000 miles begins with 1 step and the collection of 10 coins also begins with 1 coin. And that's a very nice coin with which to begin the journey.

@mark- yes, my Dansco 7172 album is merely a year set, not date-and-mint. I'm doing crusty grey circs for the Morgan and Peace dollars. (The Ikes and Susies are all BU).

This is a casual sideline set I intend to play with for maybe a year or so, have fun with, see how far I get, then sell or swap it to get one nice piece for my primary "Eclectic Box" collection.

Then I'll start another sideline collection. You see, I'm terrible at saving up for the more expensive coins I like, but by building a secondary "subcollection" like this, I'm sort of building up numismatic equity while keeping myself entertained and learning stuff about series I've never really collected (like Morgans, in this case). Then I "cash out" the equity in the sideline project and move on. It might seem a rather mercenary style of collecting, but I have found it fun and educational.

My trading partner just sent new pix of the 1922, now that he's bought it from the coin shop and has it in hand.

It seems my phone's auto-adjusted version of the above pix was pretty close to the truth.

I think I like it even more based on these pictures.

It has a few hits and marks. I don't mind them at all.

The album is coming along nicely, though I have yet to really start on the Peace dollar portion of it yet. Just have the 1921 and 1922 as of this post, but with the former I've gotten one of the keys done early.
