Just pulled the trigger, it's not in hand yet, but it has exacty the great grey circ appearance I'm after. I'm pleased. Now I just need one with the same look from each of the other years.
Believe me, I have learned how challenging it will be to find the rest with a similar look. Have browsed many thousands on eBay now, and this look is literally less than "one in a thousand" on the lower-relief coins. It's easier to find on the high relief '21s. But now I've established a benchmark and I look forward to the challenge. Since I have a Dansco 7172 album I'll only need one a year, not date AND mint.
(There is nothing more frustrating than finding one with the ideal look, only to find it's got rim damage or scratches.)
Oooh. I like it. I’ve started the same set and you’re absolutely correct. Coins with this look are 1 in 1000. I got the 1921 and three or four other dates before I got distracted. I’ll work on it again sometime.
I just posted this in another thread, but I think you might like it too. They look like twins:
@jaypem- I still have the one I got in our swap, and liked it fine, but decided to switch gears and pursue this darker, more contrasting look in Peace dollars instead. Even though it's going to be pretty challenging.
@lordmarcovan If you are doing a year set, I think that is 10 coins, right? Yes, that will be a challenge. But the journey of 1,000 miles begins with 1 step and the collection of 10 coins also begins with 1 coin. And that's a very nice coin with which to begin the journey.
@mark- yes, my Dansco 7172 album is merely a year set, not date-and-mint. I'm doing crusty grey circs for the Morgan and Peace dollars. (The Ikes and Susies are all BU).
This is a casual sideline set I intend to play with for maybe a year or so, have fun with, see how far I get, then sell or swap it to get one nice piece for my primary "Eclectic Box" collection.
Then I'll start another sideline collection. You see, I'm terrible at saving up for the more expensive coins I like, but by building a secondary "subcollection" like this, I'm sort of building up numismatic equity while keeping myself entertained and learning stuff about series I've never really collected (like Morgans, in this case). Then I "cash out" the equity in the sideline project and move on. It might seem a rather mercenary style of collecting, but I have found it fun and educational.
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.
The album is coming along nicely, though I have yet to really start on the Peace dollar portion of it yet. Just have the 1921 and 1922 as of this post, but with the former I've gotten one of the keys done early.

Edited to add I see he found you. With a name like razor face I thought you might want to lay low for awhile

Congratulations on your acquisition. It must have circulated a lot in the roaring 20s!
The high relief Peace Dollar looks so much better than its low relief version, even when circulated!
Very nice LordM

An honest, circulated 1921 ! Nice.
Really great coin! Peace dollars with this look are not easy to find.
Very sweet Peace My Lord. The look is great, and the detail stands out nicely.
Yes.........I would tend to agree that you would have a lot of trouble finding "that look" for an entire collection.
Pete
Nice patina. I love that old look to it.
I like the look of that '21.

Sweet! A nice find for sure...

I sure like it. I had one almost the same and sold it and wish I hadn't.
A really pretty original 21. Crusty, it gives them a special look. A cool coin
Nice acquisition Lordmarcovan, a hard finding look indeed.
Great acquisition LordM.... Congratulations.... I have been seeking one like that for about a year now.... Cheers, RickO
Your coin totally looks like the one that my mother had in her junk drawer...except for the fact that my mums coin was a '22.

Looks like there may be a sequel. A CoinTalk member just bought this one in his local coin shop and offered it to me for 27 bucks plus shipping.
Out of curiosity, I used my phone's tone auto-adjust feature on the photos, just to see what would happen, and it came out looking like this:
Years ago I had a friend who was a crop duster.
ALL his coins looked like that after being around the junk he worked with.
Oh Lord, fantastic!
Dave
A very nice circ.
Good. Building a set that matches will be a challenge.
Nice score I like
My trading partner just sent new pix of the 1922, now that he's bought it from the coin shop and has it in hand.
It seems my phone's auto-adjusted version of the above pix was pretty close to the truth.
I think I like it even more based on these pictures.
It has a few hits and marks. I don't mind them at all.
I L VE it! Congrats
mine is more coppery....
Beauties, Rob!!
Nice coins, lovely, and I like them when they have that look.
Well done, and it will be a fun challenge.
