I could swear I owned one like that at one time....I checked and I did not. I had a set of $10 Indians going for a long while and seemed to have at least come across one like that...in auction perhaps. Nice one!

don't worry, the coin has a book value of around 800, it will stay in witten's collection. I paid less then 4 k for my ms-64 1907 $10 indian gold no motto, but you never know, like P.T. Barnum used to say, "there's a sucker born every minute"

With all due respect your 64 and the book value has zero and I mean zero to do with this coin. None.

Very true. My only hesitation with the coin is if the toning is real. Leather pouch toning can do some really amazing things to a coin, but it has a certain even look it most of the time. This almost looks like it is more akin to album toning which makes it suspect. There is a reason why you don't find gold like this, and it isn't because collectors didn't store them in albums.....

I have long been trying to put together a circ toned set of Indians (it is freaking tough). The 20-S (almost impossible), 30-S (pretty much impossible) and 33 (really impossible unless I become very wealthy and decide to make a pocket piece. Outside of those and the rolled and wire, the set is doable with some degree of toning and it is frankly just fun...which is what we are supposed to be having here btw. :)

This 08-D is a coin I bought years ago raw out of an album. Dusky rim toning fading into deeper orange with hints of red that contrast with the less exposed (to the album) skin.

This 08-S was likely a leather toned coin. Even deep orange with dirty/dusky particles that I think are "leather powder" (read tanned cow skin) in the protected areas.

    Good stuff CL.

I’ll leave you with one thought. If you saw the OP coin in hand you would try your very best to buy it regardless of any doubts.

I love that you are putting this set together. Insane but I love it.

I spent 15 years searching high end AU $10 Indians and I still swear I've seen this coin before. Driving me nuts I can't remember. Damn this slowly fading memory of mine!

    Whatever the case...great coin....love it.

Ya, the price I paid for this one had nothing to do with the grade. How many other $10 Indians have you seen that look like this? Probably very few, if any. Here's a video of it in hand:

Too bad the coin has yet to be TrueViewed. This one is very much like yours in AU58:

I think the toning on these coins is very nice, but not necessarily rare. You might even be able to collect a whiole set of nicely toned $10 Indians.
