Do you buy coins just because you perceive them to be a "good buy" at the time?
Not talking flip or resale profit level, but you just see a coin and the price entices you to buy it?
Talking coins that may even be outside your interests.

"Reasonable" is the key. There are good deals out there.........gotta know what they are.

I asked the price, he said $20.
I paid so fast I nearly set the money on fire.

I see something, perhaps have never seen before, and think it's too cheap and then pull the trigger. I have a safe full of "why did I buy this?" coins.

I have a relatively small collection so if it is a good price and I can make money I'll buy it to resell. Can't recall buying much knowing that I will keep it just because of price, always ends up sold.

Yes, and I have come to regret it multiple times too. The old saying that sometimes cheap isn’t cheap enough is very salient in thinly capitalized markets.

If you can’t flip it, then what is the point? If resale is not an option, then my answer to the poll would change.
I've dropped auction bids on coins that were sitting "just too cheap!"
Without fail, I've either been outbid by multiple other people lurking in the background....or succeeded simply in raising the bid on the current bidder, who seemed to be the one guy who really wanted it.
No, but what I can buy is limited by price. I have a pretty strict budget for anything that's not the medicine that keeps me alive.
You CAN flip it. My poll was to see if anyone buys just "good buys." NOT profit items.
IOW, you see it priced very reasonably for someone who wants one, but you don't ...really...want it but you buy it because it's priced attractively... Even if not worth trying to flip it.
I have thrown up "cover bids" at auction. I only won once for a "Sams Inn" Civil War token. It was one of the few times I got a bargain in an auction.
The first time I bid in a live auction online, I had a particular coin in mind - a "must have." But I was worried that my bids might not go through. So I decided to test the system out on an earlier lot. My idea was that I would place an early low bid to make sure my bids were going through. Since I would be outbid, I wasn't worried about what I bid on. The auction was an active one, but we got to a lot that had a low opening bid of $30. I clicked the "bid" button, and my bid registered - $35 - and there it sat...until I won it. A counterstamped coronet large cent. So that was literally a coin I bought because just because of its price! And yeah, I still have it somewhere... ;-)

Yep - long ago. Bought a bunch of choice AU bust halves at an auction of foreign coins. No one else was interested and there was no reserve. Paid very little for a large group.
yes, this coin, the only ms68 in the entire series. I offered a low price since it was not in my field of interest.

Yeah I have many times, actually, just did it a few days ago with a 1896 Barber Dime graded NGC AU58. Only bought it because of the low price that I could get it for compared to the grading value of it. I've bought a lot of coins only because of the low price of them to put into my collection to keep for a few years.
I am not a penny collector but man did I go shopping last week when the opportunity presented itself to me.
Sometimes but less and less as I grew up in this field.
I started collecting 8 months ago and tend to want everything and anything on low ball price.
But along the way I learn a lot from our forum members and with better discipline; my collecting habit becomes more refined & narrower in interest

I did a couple cover bid without any contention for 1908 $20 Saint Gaudens; both with Motto which is scarcer. The bidding expired way into midnight hours HST (while mainlanders were sleeping); won both from different sellers a week apart less than $1425 each. I sent them in altogether and Voila MS63 with back to back cert.
Good nite owl steal I thought for the 1908 Saints with motto. These two will always reminded me of that.

I voted 'no,' as if I buy a coin for my collection, price is a factor but whether I like the coin is paramount. If I do buy anything solely for price, it's with an eye to resell at a profit.
I just bought 12 Canadian 64 and 65 mint sets and 12 US proof sets for $310. I just couldn’t help myself.

Really surprised by the results.....I assumed I would be in the minority with all my former impulse purchases. I expected most here to be much more focused; glad to see I'm not alone LOL!
Most serious collectors make mostly serious well thought out purchases to advance their collections but it's okay to occasionally make a fun purchase on a whim. A hobby should be fun.

No, I have not.... That being said, I certainly would if presented with the right opportunity.... It would have to appeal to me to some extent, then the cheap price would clinch it...Cheers, RickO
