Nice coin! Are die striations common on the 78-cc? I had an 1878-cc in PCGS MS66 I sold to Jim Halperin for a little over $2K around 2000 that had noticeable striations on the cheek.

    Not $10k nice

    MS-66? CAC?

I saw a VG 78-CC sell at a local auction today for $240 (+13% BP). So, $10k might be a deal for that coin. LOL.

Is it possibly a rare VAM?

Is that heavy die polish on the cheek?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

That cheek bothers me along with the rim on the obv @ 12...that is an insane price. Congrats to the seller I guess

If it's a 66 CAC in the current market, that's probably the right price - as much as you hate the idea.

Nice coin @ShadyDave. Perfect grade given the cost of the next few grades up. Not a huge fan of the OP coin, less so now that I know the price. ;)

Those are planchet striations, not die striations.

Here is my 65+ cac for reference...a $350-$400 coin... (don't mind the hook on the lower chin, that's from my phone and not on the coin)

Your coin is a beauty. The OP coin looks 66+ to me. And $8K -11K is pretty much what they sell for. I don’t see the problem.

    Yet.

That coin in the original post is hardly widgetary. But those are not die striations on the cheek, they are roller marks, unstruck areas from the deepest part of the blank planchet where the die failed to strike them out. They are caused when metal strips are flattened between two rollers, part of the planchet production process. Personally I do not like roller marks, but they are a common occurrence among Morgan dollars. I think they downgrade the appearance and the grade, but I think the TPGs (and CAC?) do not mind them as much.

    Kind regards,

    George

I won't touch that coin. It's fine the way it is.
