I recently picked up this "hole filler" for my 7070 Type Set and wanted to see what the forum members had to say about her in comparison to PCGS.
Thank you for your interest and comments!

Looks like a nice XF45. Congrats!
Lance.
I was thinking VF, can't see any luster, but wear is not bad.
XF, but possibly cleaned
BHNC #203
XF here.
I said 40.
I'd say approaching XF-40, if not fully that.
I got my Graham book last night, and was trying to attribute my '37, '38, and '39 coins. Great fun, (and eyestrain), since the die differences are MUCH less significant for the reeded edge halves than the lettered edge.
Immediately, I noticed the strong repunching on the second 8 in your date, with the remnants of the first attempt appearing below. I seem to recall that variety in the book....so I'll give you that attribution and Graham number when I get home tonight, unless someone beats me to it.
I imagine it is in a PCGS EF40 holder, but the surfaces appear to have been washed a bit in the past to clean them up.

I'd guess 40, nice looking coin.
XF-40
ANA-LM, CWTS-LM, NBS, TAMS, ANS
I see repunching on the 8.
Nice coin!.. XF-40
Well, it's my decidedly unprofessional opinion that you have a GR-16, rated as an R-4, (121 to 160 exist).
"Another scarce variety that will take some persistent searching to find a nice, original coin. One of the "naked eye" varieties, the recut second 8 can be identified easily, even without a loop (sic)."
There you go. Another reason to like it.
45 details, cleaned
Washed out EF. Hole filler as you say
Latin American Collection
I’m assuming since you’re wondering what everyone thinks about the coin compared to pcgs that pcgs had an issue with it? Maybe they thought it was cleaned?
Regardless of what pcgs said, I would love to have that in my type set!
Very nice looking coin.
Very nice looking 40..... That may have had a mild dip in the past... but I would be happy with a coin like that... Cheers, RickO
40 cleaned, lifeless. But good hole filler as said.
No, PCGS did not have an issue with it. The purpose of this type of thread is to 1), show off new acquisitions 2), allow forum members to give their two cents worth of comments on grade and overall observations and 3). to discuss what others see that others may not. An example is that some indicate that there is evidence of cleaning, while others are thinking that it could grade as high as XF or VF and some give their justification as to why.
An image can tell the viewer so much and another image of the same coin can tell a different story.

I think a lot of circulated coins suffer when dinner plate sized photos are taken.
Is there field chatter and dings and scrapes? YES. It's a circulated coin!! That doesn't mean it wasn't cleaned...maybe. But I don't think the cleaning, (if there ever was a conscious effort to clean it), is obvious.
The coin looks pretty wholesome on my phone, in a more size representative format.
ill go with an xf 40 as well. im wondering about a cleaning as well, just saying
I am a little early for the customary 48 hours, but Phil's imagery shows this coin in a much better light;
PCGS XF45

The obverse is close to EF-40, but the reverse is a bit less. I would grade it VF-30. As for the "washed out" comments, it is a circulated 170 year old coin, and most of them have had something done to them over the years. I don't think that cleaning is an issue given the grade.
I checked out the images on Coinfacts when the grade was not posted, and it looked comparable to a lot of XFs. I guess these don't come with luster in XF.
Looks much nicer in Phil's imagery. I'd have gone 40.
I'm just happy I got the attribution right. (I should probably quit while I'm ahead).
And weren't the Reiver coins all in NGC slabs when they were auctioned off? Or was that just "most of them". Or does PCGS cross some named collections....(slab looks relatively new).
I was at 35/40 from the first photos. I’d have been at 45/50 from the second, with in-hand luster deciding.
The slab does not have the microprinting like the latest version has. I do remember someone saying that the certification numbers being handed out started with 83XXXXXX
There is a set of Reiver Auction Catalogs through Heritage "Heritage Coin Auction #390: The Jules Reiver Collection, Vol. 1-3 Paperback – January 1, 2006" Seemingly all of the ones that I could access, Amazon preview, did indicate NGC holders.
