Interesting. If neither are dated the birth year then the 1885-CC Morgan. Otherwise, a nice 1918 or even 1818 half would be awesome!

  • JimnightJimnight Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭✭

I would rather receive a 1885 CC Morgan silver dollar.

  • kiyotekiyote Posts: 5,588 ✭✭✭✭✭

I would definitely take the platinum coin! That’s half an ounce of a very expensive industrial metal. The 2004 looks amazing with the low mintage of barely 5,000.

Since the price of palladium has outperformed the Morgan dollar by multiples over the last dozen years, and since palladium has value as a commodity and is more liquid, my unsentimental answer is the palladium coin. Doesn't mean that I wouldn't consider a Morgan as a birth gift in hopes that i might be creating a future collector, but the odds are that the kid will appreciate the palladium coin a lot more when he/she goes off to college.

It’s not like I don’t think Morgans don’t make great gifts because they do but to a non-collector a CC mint Mark won’t mean much. Go for a nice AU-55 1880-s for $30 so they can handle it and appreciate the history it is.

I would rather debate a nice 1885-O or a Proof Silver Eagle. Once the kid gets old enough and maybe likes coins, there aren't a whole lot of "affordable" Morgans that are uphill from an 85-CC. I think they should appreciate the value of coins before having a key date handed to them. I guess all this means that I vote for the Pt. as much as I would rather not.

If the Morgan is truly a BU piece then I'd go that route. A 1/2oz plat proof in ogp would be tempting though.

As a PS, for the record I would rather have a nice chain cent than bullion of equivalent value.

  • CoinPhysicistCoinPhysicist Posts: 603 ✭✭✭✭

I'd rather have the Morgan over 1/2 ounce of platinum, but that's just me.

And a nice chain cent costs like 20 or 40x the items in discussion here... we would all rather have that, but that isn't an option.

As a collector, the 1885-CC dollar would be more interesting, but who knows what the new born will be? The platinum is just a hunk of metal and not a particularly pretty hunk of medal at that.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Neither. Tell Aunt Hagatha to put the $500 in a mutual fund. When I retire at age 75, it should be worth $500,000. Neither of the coins is likely to be able to do that. They certainly didn't in the past 75 years.

[Side note: I'd expect platinum and palladium to start dropping in the next 10 years as the main industrial use (catalytic converters) starts to disappear with the increase in electric cars.]

A day old,,,,, some of us still feel the same way 50+ years later. But if that's not one of the options, I'd take the CC in anything over MS66.

Platinum eagle. Not even close. I would expect that by the time I hit age 21, the platinum eagle would be worth 2 or 3 times an 1885-CC of equivalent value today. Maybe sooner.
