Numismatist. 54 year member ANA. Former ANA Senior Authenticator. Winner of four ANA Heath Literary Awards; three Wayte and Olga Raymond Literary Awards; Numismatist of the Year Award 2009, and ANA Lifetime Achievement Award 2020. He was a truly great gentleman, and one of the greatest numismatists of all time. This marks the final passing of an era.
Even though he lived a very full life (more than most); I am still very saddened by this news.

Condolences to those on the forums that might have been personal friends, and awe from the rest of us that will never be able to duplicate the feats of a great numismatist.
I remember consulting with Eric while I was still with ANACS on the U.S.A.O.G. $20's that were very controversial back then. John J. Ford was still frantically defending them, and everything else he had ever sold, and Eric was very adamant on defending the truth. He once said to me: "There's a very easy way to prove that these are counterfeits. Give John J. Ford a lie detector test!"

What a life and RIP. What a GENTLEMAN
I've shared this story a few times. I had lunch with Eric and his nephew in 1988 when he was a youngster at the age of 77 in St Louis. He was an executive at the company I worked for. I didn't collect coins then nor did I know had such a collection. I didn't have two nickels to rub together back then. He impacted me in a positive way as I was in my 20's. Kind and wicked sharp

Sad to hear, but 106, thats a heck of a run. He leaves a great legacy, numismatic and personally it sounds like.
I'm thankful for the work he's done.
So sad. His name will be remembered 100 years hence as a great collector and a great scholar.

Probably one of the last great collectors. Forgot more than I'll ever know. They say that old age is a privilege denied to many. Mr Newman got his "money's" worth.

106, enjoying the hobby for nearly 100 of them, leaving a legacy of the NNP while still alive, still publishing award-winning articles at age 104. Well done, Eric P. Newman! If numismatics were an arcade game, he'd be putting EPN next to the high score today, never to be topped. Cheers, and rest in peace!

I read the Newman biography and it is clear we all owe him a great debt for the state of numismatics. In my favorite numismatic book, Moulton's Ford and the Franklin Hoard, Mr. Newman is the clear hero, the most prominent of a few in the field that took a stand against Ford and his shenanigans. Regulated said it perfectly, a champion for those that value the truth.

Consider that he lived through nearly half of the history of US coinage.
I was fortunate to have picked up a few of his coins at the Heritage sale a few years ago.
