Baltimore Show Report and a venture to the “D”ark side for Charlottedude.

Added a pic from Todd @BluCC - this is how the coin looks in hand -- much more realistic than my iPhone shots.

Living only a softball throw’s distance from Baltimore, I always make it a point to go to the Whitman Fall/Winter & Spring shows. This year’s show would be a bit of a challenge in that I had to come on Thursday to be able to wedge in a weekend get away with family on the Outer Banks.

I arrived just before 10 am Thursday morning, and since I wasn’t really interested in any of the early or Charlotte mint gold offered in the Stacks auction, ‘fessed up my $75 for Early Bird access. Upon entry, I made a beeline for Todd & his father Roger’s table @ BluCC Coins to submit a coin... yes, just one coin for imaging, but a significant one in my line of collecting — an 1846-C HE in PCGS AU-58.
Todd does a fantastic job with his photography (looking forward to seeing how the ‘46-C pics turn out!) and I always enjoy chatting with him and Roger. I submitted the coin and without further adieu, made off for a number of what I consider reliable dealers (reliable in many aspects, to include the likelihood of having something I’d be interested in).
I did come across a nice 1858-C HE in P-45 CAC at the first table on my list. Although not a scarce date, in terms of Charlotte HEs, finding one with sufficient eye-appeal has become much tougher with all the “coin enhancement” activities going on. This was undoubtedly a nice example of an XF-45 coin, certainly not AU, but nicely entrenched in the mid-XF grade. The owner was asking well into AU money for the coin, and while I was able to move him a little south of his original asking price, I still couldn’t justify reaching that far for that particular date. It’s one of the more readily available ones in the series, so I’m confident the right one at the right price will come around.

On to the next table on my list... one of my favorite experts, dealers and representatives in the country for rare, original gold. This gentleman had a beautiful 1810 HE in P-53 CAC that was gorgeous for the grade. A lovely coin that I would’ve happily purchased had I not already owned the date in a P-58 CAC holder. There was also a lovely ‘53-C HE in P-55 CAC, a date which I also own in a P-50 CAC holder that I dare say rivals the eye- appeal of the P-55 coin.

Those were pretty much all the dates of interest I saw, and given my compressed schedule I exchanged a few salutary words and pleasantries, and moved on to the next table on my list. That gentleman is also a long-time dealer in Southern gold who seems to be focusing more and more on offering very attractive and original coins. This gent had an interesting coin that caught my eye, and somewhat unusual for me, had this strange mint Mark... a “D” instead of a “C”, in fact. This was strange territory for me... a leap over to the “D”arkside? It was an 1860-D HE, which upon inspection, checked all the right blocks for the grade. I’m not a D-mint enthusiast, but this one spoke to me, and is now making me think about putting together a nice type set of VF/XF Dahlonega gold.

After some brief negotiations on price, we were able to come to a level I was happy with, and made the purchase. As soon as I handed the check over, I was on my way back to Todd’s table to get the new purchase into his imaging line up and hopefully make it out of B’more by 1pm. While I waited, I took more of the bourse in. Being that it was mostly before noon that I was there, the aisles and even many of the tables seemed lightly occupied, but I attribute that to the small number of collectors who were willing to pay the early bird fee and dealers being away from their tables to work wholesale deals.

Overall, I was pleased with what I came to do... get the ‘46-C imaged by Todd, maybe pick up a nice early or southern mint gold coin... AND get that one imaged. All blocks checked... here’s a couple amateur pics from my iPhone... the spot @ Liberty’s eye brow/hairline is a scuff on the holder. I’ll have to buff that out when I have time. Meanwhile, I’ll wait for Todd’s photographic mastery to share better pics of the coin.

This Baltimore show was really good for me although I couldn't fill the top two items on my want list. I found three coins for a 1936 Proof set, which is a current secondary project, and I found a Henry the VIII groat showed him looking like the 300 + pound king that we normally think of him being. I've been looking for one of those coins for three years, but all of the examples that I saw, and there were not very many, were very low low grade. This one is a VF-EF with very good color.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
