The next 2 photos show the Luster better I believe. The Obverse photo also shows the sort of scruffy cheek.


PCGS MS62BN. Personally I think its a 63 all day long. Way too much luster for a 62. Scruffy cheek would go with a 63 coin. Part of the auction description was " What was PCGS thinking on this coin."

    You've posted a coin that IMO can have several different grades of Uncirculated. It is a perfect example of the type of decision that a TPGS grader must make in seconds!

    I said 62 because of the strange colors above the feathers.

    Since "they" removed the joke thread, I hope you find this funny:

    Let's pretend I work for a coin grading service. Coin has luster and no rub on the high points to bother with; however, I'm not wild about its appearance. There are fingerprints and some discolored spots, especially on the important side. The next thing you might notice is the change of color around the relief and the field. This tells me that something "changed" that area of the surface.

    As a grader, I want to put a value on it, right? Well, bid for an MS-63 is about $60. Retail for an MS-60 is about $40. I'll bet most of the coins at this price have some friction. Retail for an MS-63 is about $150. What's the coin actually worth? IMO, somewhere over MS-60 but not close to MS-63. So, I'm going to punch MS-62 BN into my grading screen. The finalizer and other grader is not as conservative and they grade it MS-63.

    So, me...MS-62.
    The fictional TPGS that foolishly gave me a job...MS-63

    The grade of the OP's coin rendered by a real major grading service due to the # of marks, hairlines and eye-appeal...MS-64.

    Not sure of the grade, but guessed MS64BN

    I would say 63 or 64. My grade would be 63 but have seen quite a few that look like this as 64's in PCGS plastic.

    Thanks. I see the number of MS-64 guesses has dropped by about 30% from the first postings. Probably because of the big hit on cheek in the new photos.

    Now I'll try to back peddle too...LOL. I hope it is NOT a TPGS 64 but still very possible as there is lots of room between MS-64 and perfection.

    Just because I grade it low doesn't mean I sell it cheap (if I had anything to sell). I am not a fan of gradeflation.

    I agree with spacehayduke....the second set of photos do show better luster, but the scratches become more apparent also.

    I voted MS-62 because of the dullness in the fields.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    The strike is hammered, but you have contact marks on the face, a sensitive grading area, and the patina of the coin is not attractive to me. The fingerprint doesn't help.

    I thought MS63 before I got to the slab pictures but would agree with the assigned grade, due to what is clear in the obverse picture, and express gratitude that 291fifth isn't in the PCGS grading room.

    You should work where I do. When we open a monster box of SE's after pizza Friday's all of us try to finger the coins so that one day that will be "enhanced" for future collectors. We also have a bunch of vintage coins around here that are so "enhanced" I cannot believe they will ever sell. :smiley:
