I wish the obverse is similar to that of the 1986 $5 gold. Miss Liberty of this series is so ugly looking and I am glad that I never own a platinum coin.

I agree with other posters-the only way this coin has any value is if no one buys it. It's ugly and not worth almost 50% price over spot- the mint is getting ridiculous with these premiums. Maybe the mint director is an Obama holdover trying to make everyone happy with no household limits or mintage numbers so high its equivalent to such anyway. The silver eagle was the only winner this year that is more than half over with little promise going forward.

I used to love the Platinum Eagles. I used to buy them just as soon as they were available. Oh wait, I still do love the APE's. I just don't care for recycled bullion obverses on overpriced Proof Coins.
The 10,000 mintage doesn't help. At a mintage of 1886 this might have drawn my interest.

2016 mintage 9,151This 2017 proof platinum sold 5,230 the first week (or two). Definitely not a key and also an old recycled design. I believe the 2015 remains the key for $100 proof versions. All of the burnished $100's from 2006 to 2008 W were also lower mintage.

Some of these proofs in OGH are actually selling for $1199 or $100 below the Mint issue price already at some dealers now. Obviously looked at and they must have a lot of 69's or lower grade expectations. Demand has collapsed for these. The mint needs to seriously consider new designs.

This year's design was the original design used for the 20th anniversary, and from my cynical pov, obviously chosen as not to interfere with the Mint's premier product for the 225th. Imagine the comparisons if say, the 2015 APE design was chosen to compete with the AmLib HR coin this year...
The mint doesn't need to consider new designs, the mint needs to consider a lower mintage. There just aren't 10K collectors of this coin.
Oh, and since I'm posting on this thread anyway, here's the latest numbers from the mint...

I just looked at the US Mint website maybe 30 minutes ago. There were 8 APES left ............... supposedly. How could this overpriced recycled design possibly be so close to a 10,000 Coin sell-out? I can believe a 9,000 Coin "sell-out".

Gone again. Of course tomorrow AM they'll be available again . I suppose they're making their legendary 7:30 AM restock and they're just lasting all day because no one really wants the Turkeys? Anything else is snatched up very fast. Not so these overpriced recycled design APT's.

Oh no only 26 APE's swinging in the trees at the US Mint. That's 62 gone in around 20 hours. At the same pace, the APE's will be gone before the days done. But fear not, there's a good chance some of these monkeys will make their way back yet again.
We are in the age of the EU where its here one hour ..... gone the next. ........ its back......... its gone again. ........ back again...... gone......... back......... gone ........ etc, etc, into infinity.

I have made a conscious effort to avoid the platinum coins. They can be huge money traps given the high value of the metal and the mint issue prices.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?0 -

I admit I bought '15 and '16 for the designs, and they're the only two pieces of platinum I own.
The one that worries me at the moment is Palladium. It's at something like a 15 year high, most likely unsustainable. (20 months ago, palladium spot was half of what it is today.) With the bullion coin coming out next month, it's giving me pause to get one, since it'll cost about the same or more than a (bullion) platinum eagle. Probably more, since they'll be sold through the secondary market like all bullion coins.
