    PCGS founders.

Or how about those who have founded PCGS, founded NGC, and founded CAC?

Who has the biggest impact today on higher end of the market pricing? I see 2 Leaders and 1 Follower in those 3 companies above.....2/3 is a net Leader.

Only one took the business model to the next level. Then one tried to duplicate it and the other modified it.

I am the OP but let me throw in John Pittman who was the subject of a short article in Coin World this week which highlighted is incredible memory and knowledge of numismatics.

He had a lot of experience, but I would question the use of the word "smart" as asked in the thread title. I was at the ANACS table at an ANA convention once when he came up and asked to use my microscope. I said of course, and after he looked at a coin with it he asked me what I thought of the date. I looked at it and it was an 1891-CC $5 with a nice repunched date. I told him that we had seen a few of that die at ANACS, and that it was not rare for the date and mint mark.

Eventually declared that it could not be a repunched date because HE had not seen it before. Sigh.

I would say Tom DeLorey and David Alexander. They always beat me at The World Series of Numismatics.

The person I always go to for information is JK.

The World Series of Numismatics was a lot of fun. I think that Dave Alexander won it three times teamed with Anthony Swiatek, I won it twice teamed with Harlan Berk, and I believe that John Kraljevich also won it twice but I cannot remember who his partner was.

One year Donn Pearlman was the moderator and he asked the question: "What time is shown on the clock on the Bicentennial half dollar?" and I correctly answered "3 o'clock." Donn looked stunned but moved on. Years later he admitted to me that he was trying to make a joke by asking a question that NOBODY could answer, but I knew it.

There is simply no smartest numismatist... Even contemplating the selection of just one begs the question why just one?

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

Which "next level" is that? You mean the current one that has much of the market confused about grading standards? One of them broke from the crowd and stepped away from TPG ownership in 1998 (as gradeflation hit)...then cut all management ties by 2002-2003. Then came back in 2008 to referee as a consumer advocate of sorts. Pretty smart if you ask me. Maybe going back to the "old level" has merit.

Lots of ways to slice it - best grader, best researcher, best trader, best writer, best executive, best cataloger, etc.

I sliced my answer to "best at profits." I took the question of "smart" to mean financial success

Such a question has no single answer... it is much like grading... a matter of opinion... Also, much like diamonds, there are many facets..... it is unlikely that any one individual is tops in all the areas... The best option is to know many numismatists... and hopefully, people recognize that the best way to do this is to be a member here, where many top notch numismatists participate. Cheers, RickO

Wasn't JA involved in the founding of PCGS, NGC as well as CAC?
