Skinner's theory of operant conditioning posits that behavior may be changed in another through various applications of positive and negative reinforcement. However, many a time a behavior repeats itself because any attention paid to it validates the existence of the behavior. How to control it? In a closed system like the Forum it's easy.
Extinction is the term that Skinner uses. Essentially, eliminating the stimuli the actor needs to maintain motivation for that behavior.
Operationalizing this re--manipulation involves changed behavior on our own parts.
Consider: a troll starts a "reasonable" thread. Any, each and every response to it is reinforcement.
Consider: Vile characterizations of others invites response. Any, each and every response is reinforcement.
Both positive and negative.
Trolls have no shame, or perhaps so much that, to deny their faults, they must project caricatures of their own personal demons onto others in order to avoiding seeing themselves. How clever to openly solicit attention, even by self-abuse..
The only behavior that does not encourage trolling is silence.......

My last here...
There one troll who has followed me is off and on. I flagged him once and don't know if that did anything. I turned him off once but decided that was silly. I think that he is a dealer because he knows some things that general public would not know about specific dealers. Beyond that I will leave the issue alone and hope that he does not return.

I don't think all trolls lie or exaggerate. I do believe they do things on purpose in a way to upset people and get attention.
I don't think anyone who disagrees with a poster is a troll as long as they can back up their opinion with a valid (even to only to themselves) statement. That includes anyone who posts in a churlish manner.

I owned Walgreens stock about the time I first started using Yahoo finance as my homepage in 1998.
The message board was very popular back then (Yahoo completely ruined them over the past 10 years) but there was one person that would post the most vile stuff I've ever seen in my life.
I finally recommended that we starve/ignore the sick SOB completely, & eventually he went away.
Won't work every time but worth a try.

Yep... that is often effective... many revel in the hate and discontent they sow....makes them feel better about themselves... I just prefer the enjoyment of the hobby and intelligent contributions that further my knowledge... so I skip over the garbage...most of it anyway... Cheers, RickO

I read HST since the days of quad (tri)? -fircated Rolling Stone newsprint to his published books.
Attended a HST "Great Shark Hunt" lecture at Marin College north of SF in '79 or '80, HST rambled incoherently, at the end he initialed / scrawled "HST" on the blank page of my GSH book. A few years later, a Boston Terrier pup chewed on the corners of the book. Pissed at the time, it's a cherished memory now.
