Okay, whatever you consider "big dog" but really ANY collectors..... what would you do ...IF...
Now here's the tricky part: It probably can NOT happen....but...

IF you had to sell or lost or whatever.... your ENTIRE collection, AND the means to afford to collect what you DID collect, what would you DO? :)

I'd focus on much fewer coins of higher quality and eye appeal at a much slower pace.

I'd pick a fraction of what I have right now and re-do, them and then add something a little different for me.

Basically I'd pare back to a Japanese type set Dansco, a 7070, add a box of 20 ancients, have a box of 20 for everything else. I would save up for the truly nice specimens as much as possible. For the two type sets, if I could, I'd keep a spectacular slabbed version for each slot in the album, and then add a coin with 'character' to the album itself.

Not sure what I would do with my medals. Perhaps be a lot more strict in choice--mommy/baby, mythology, Art Deco, sighthounds...I have so many themes medals might be passed over all together to funnel money to the coins, or else I'd really have to be more strict. Today, I'd pick Art Deco. Tomorrow it might be something else...

Sometimes I think I should just sell it all and do just this. Then my inner dragon takes over and I. Must. Hoard.

eta: so, in other words I didn't vote because I couldn't quite identify with a single choice...plus it would depend on just HOW much more restricted the funds became.

I'd collect the contents of the 2 volume Whitman complete US type set 1793- 1967, except instead of raw and cracked out for the album, seek and leave them all PCGS/CAC.

The current market is so discouraging that I really would have not have heart to get involved with it again. I'd probably work on some political items to take of my historical interests and collector's adiction.

A prime example is the auction that is coming down tonight. After it's over I'll show you what I mean. This market sucks. There is very little to buy, and what there is left to buy is priced to the moon for very average material (Nothing top POP or condition census.) with no CAC stickers and moderate rarity.

I don't get it; I just don't get it. Five years ago you could buy higher grade coins for prices that more in line with price guides and previous auction results. Today every time I bid, the items realize a new all time high price. This is the kind of market that can make a rich man a poor man very quickly.

You could say that if reconsigned the same item to auction immediately, I'd get the same price minus the fees to the auction house, which are significant. I just don't have the nerve to do that.

I would still collect coins, however, I would not recreate the series I have done. I would do, much as I do now, select the coin that attracts me... be it U.S., foreign or ancient..... and just enjoy coins on a much more select basis. Cheers, RickO

If you are too frugal (Only buy properly graded coins at Gray Sheet) these days, you will buy nothing if you collect coins of substance,

I am getting close. This market is no fun at all.

I'm with Bill Jones on this. At Long Beach today, I was offered three problem free coins for the grade (one of them very expensive for me) at 20% over what my Heritage rep thought was appropriate and ditto re what has recently sold on Coin Facts.

The first was a Liberty Nickel in MS 66 which was not quite as nice as one sold recently by Heritage in an MS 66 Plus holder, and the latter was slightly cheaper than the offered coin. The second was an all there NGC 64 BN 1849 Half Cent. I don't need the coin, but it was so nice, I would have bought it if it wasn't priced 20% too high. The market is very thin on these coins, and I don't want to play the crossing / resubmission / sticker game to try to make up the spread. It's the nicest 4 I've seen (nicer than a 5 BN I saw today), but I'm not going there. The third one was an 1818 Capped Bust Small Dentil Quarter in PC 4 in an OGH. It was an original coin, but I just couldn't justify the premium being asked for it in my mind.

If you are planning on selling a coin, you should know that if a dealer doesn't think he / she can flip it quickly, you're not going to get market for the coin. So if you overpay for a coin in this market, unless you buy what turns out to be the right coin and hold it for awhile, you'll be buried in the coin.

Many what are to me expensive coins in gem or supergrade have lost value in the last 10 to 20 years. Most gem Barber material, Seated Proof coins, esoteric coins like 3 cent pieces, Liberty Nickels, and most 20th century coins. Early type has been strong for quite some time, but you're going to pay dearly for it, so be prepared to keep it for awhile.

I would likely quit collecting coins entirely. I would continue with numismatic studies. I don't necessarily need to own coins. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy them from afar.
