Your Favorite Twenty Coins (And where they came from)

For me, buying a new coin always leads me to taking a look at the collection as a whole as well as the coins that I consider to be my "trophies", which is obviously a subjective term. Some wouldn't qualify them as such, but based on what I look for, these are nearly irreplaceable.

Below are my top twenty, and how they came into the collection. Would love to hear from everyone else too, but only if you have pics!

My icon. Purchased in 2006 in an Fat Slab NGC MS66 holder from CTCollector on the boards. Crossed to PCGS. Top Pop. Sent to CAC. Green sticker.

Purchased from Andy Lustig in 2012 in a PCGS MS66 Secure Holder. Pop 1/0. Monster.

Purchased from Broadstruck on the boards in 2007 in a Fat Slab NGC MS64 holder, where it still resides. Undergraded. Sent to CAC. Green sticker.

Bought on Ebay in 2009. Purchased graded in NGC MS65 holder. Crossed to same grade at PCGS. A stunner moose of a coin.

Bought today! Ha! From Doug Winter. Purchased graded by PCGS in MS63 holder with a CAC sticker.

Purchased from Andy Lustig in 2006 in a PCGS MS67 holder. Finest graded of the date and tied with one other of the type. OMG coin.

Purchased raw from Earl Collison in 2015. Sent to PCGS. Came back XF45. Sent to CAC. Green sticker. Killer tough rare piece.

Purchased from Heritage ANA auction in 2016. Paid stupid money, but I had to have. Purchased in PCGS OGH XF40 holder with Gold CAC sticker.

Purchased raw from Earl Collison in 2015. Sent to PCGS and got an AU50. Sent to CAC. Green sticker. It glowed in the DANSCO from which it was plucked.

Taken as payment from Earl Collison in 2016 in an old fat slab NGC MS65 holder. Sent to CAC. Gold Sticker. Just how a Morgan should look.

Purchased from a Heritage auction in 2014 in a PCGS MS68 holder. Finest for the type. As much as a monster as a small coin can be.

The coin that made me fall in love with RE Halves. Purchased from Carmel Stamp and Coin in 2003. The epitome of circ perfection and the coin by which all circ RE Halves are judged. Bought in a PCGS XF45 holder. Sent to CAC. Green sticker.

Heritage auction in 2016 in a large but largely unimpressive Swiss sale. This coin stood out. Bought in an old fat slab NGC MS68 holder.

Purchased from Rick Sear, aka ColonelJessup in 2015. It is the standard by which circ Bust left half eagles are judged. Bought in a PCGS XF45 holder with CAC sticker.

Another Shooting Thaler from Ebay. Bought in 2008 in an OGH PCGS MS67 holder. Just killer and tied for finest graded.

Taken as payment from Earl Collison in 2016 in an NGC MS65 old fat slab holder. Sent to CAC. Green sticker. Big beautiful coin.

Purchased from Andy Lustig in 2012 in a PCGS Secure Plus MS66 holder. Another I was able to cherry from a near complete date run. Pop 1/0. I can't find any to match it and a few others.

Purchased from Fishteeth on the boards. A beautiful baby bust half dime that presents so nicely. Bought in PCGS AU58 OGH holder. Sent to CAC. Green sticker.

Bought raw from out of a shoe box from Dean Blackburn in 2010. Sent to NGC and came back MS67. Crossed to PCGS. Prettiest reverse I have ever seen on a German coin.

Purchased from Seth Chandler in 2016 in a PCGS AU50 holder. Sent to CAC. Green sticker. The model coin for circ Indian Eagles.

I LOVE the 1872 Seated half, the 39-O is pretty stunning. The 37 Reeded edge is absolutely perfect. That type 1 SLQ is no slouch either.

Wonderful CoinLt!

I'll put this one up (don't have time for twenty right now!). I went out to a PCGS auction in Las Vegas in 2004 to get it. It was a pop 1 (PR67DCAM) at the time (now pop 3). Met Laura for the first time, who was there bidding in behalf of Bruce Scher (RIP). Laura/Bruce won it, but Bruce later sold it to me for what he'd paid a couple of months later when he sold his 3CN proof set in order to build a type set.

I started working on this and decided that 20 coins was way too many to post. So I am going to make it six pieces.

1795 Small Eagle $5 gold. The reverse of this piece was the only design that was not represented in my collection. I purchased this at a Baltimore show. PCGS AU-55

1805 Dime, PCGS AU-58. I purchased this from the late Catherine Bullowa back in the 1970s. It was my introduction to high grade early U.S. coins.

1907 High Relief $20, purchased a Summer FUN show a few years ago. This coin really showcases the beauty of this design. NGC MS-65.

1782 Libertas Amereicana Medal. Purchased from Anthony Taranova many years ago. Raw

1797 Bust Dollar, I reallhy like this coin because it is totally original. I wish I could buy the whole set like this. I've never been able to get it right in a picture; it looks better in person. Purchased from Jim McGuigan at a Baltimore show. PCGS EF-45

1796 No Stars Quarter Eagle. This coin finished my type set. It is the rarest U.S. type coin by a small margin over the 1808 quarter eagle. Purchased in a Stacks' auciton. NGC MS-62.

I only have an older version of this uploaded. When I get home tonight, I'll post the new one and describe where they came from. For me, the concept of my best 20 is fairly fluid and they come and go. I already know there are couple of these that will be bumped by better coins.

i remember this coin. there were a lot of really nice examples of half dollars and dollars (many with gold stickers) in that auction. i lot viewed all of them. this one, was easily one of the top five (eye appeal) in those lots, in my opinion. it's not stupid money because where are you going to find another coin that looks like THAT. (ps, i did not bid on this coin because i ended up blowing my budget on a non-auction piece before the hammer even dropped).

anyway, my other observation is that your CB $5 newp seems to have rekindled a fire. i can see why! great coins.

A few years back there was an auction in England. I stayed up in the middle of the night as I had to.....
at almost any price....purchase this British Conder Token as I adore the Slouth Design, it was toned and a proof!
which is very rare. It is advertising the Red Lion Inn, which is still there today! I have drooled over these
and never thought I would own one. Well getting back to the late night auction...It was live and I could here the people bidding against me. It came down to one guy and me. Overtime he bid I went above him and overtime you could here him moan or yell out in disgust. I guess he was so angry he raised his bid considerably and I bid higher.
He screamed in anger and you can hear the audience in the background aghast.......Probably the best night I had in years!! It was raw and thank goodness PCGS agreed that this was a proof.

I am somewhat hesitant to post my coins since they are in commonly available grades and are not high on the rarity scale. Perhaps I'm a little insecure of being judged, but as is often said here, collect what you like and don't worry about what other people think. Nonetheless, I would like to hear what you think. After all, a coin board is a shared community.

My collecting tastes and standards have certainly changed over the years and I look back on what I've flushed out of the collection with chagrin at times, and relief at other times. Tuition expense, but also because I wanted something new or better. There are only a few I wished I retained, but in general, I'm very happy with what I have now. I don't consider any of my pieces "trophy" level as the learned coinlieutenant solicits, but each is special to me.

Leading off with an AU PCGS Fugio copper - the essential (IMHO) coin for any collection, from CRO in 2016

AU58 BN PCGS CAC half cent with hard milk chocolate surfaces that I adore bought at a FUN show from Chris McCawley in 2012

MS64+ BN PCGS CAC half cent with dark chocolate color with blazing luster from Tom Reynolds at a St. Louis show in 2013

MS64 RB PCGS indian cent with golden orange toning from Angel Dees at Central States in 2014

MS66 PCGS CAC buff from our very own OP coinlieutenant in 2013 - yep, common as dirt, but striking nonetheless.

MS65+ PCGS CAC dime from Tom Bush (twice) beginning in 2014. Tom is a sweetheart and a gentleman dealer!

AU58 OGH PCGS CAC half from RYK (after much begging and he was gracious to me) in 2012 who had beaten me out previously when first offered by Mark Feld. I'll always remember the secret of looking up Feld's picture site to gander at his new pieces before his newsletter went out, thereby getting an early bird opportunity. Hey, I felt like an insider. This coin is really the pride of my collection and I have a large high quality print of this on my office wall (that has shockingly gathered no interest from coworkers).

MS65 OGH PCGS CAC 49-S half from CRO in 2016 - love the obverse colors, reverse is ho-hum (a single side wondercoin)

MS66 NGC CAC from Mark Feld in 2011 - I'm thinking this coin will grade at a + level if submitted raw to PCGS.

and last, but not least are a few foreign coins that slake my thirst for wonderful copper

1792 half penny from Jerry Bobbe in 2009 - I love the dentils and the big nose which is a close approximation of the good general

1794 half penny from Jerry Bobbe in 2008 - incredible luster and condition for copper this old

1797 half penny from Bill McKivor in 2008 of which Bobbe wished to acquire from me given its surfaces. A wonderful story about this significant battle - oh does this token have its charms!

Lastly, and not at 20 yet, an 1824 1R in a NGC fatty from CRO in 2015

OK, like I said before, the thing I posted earlier is dated. Here's a more accurate reflection of my current favorite 20 coins.

Working from the upper left corner in a more-or-less clockwise direction, here they are:

1921 Peace dollar. PCGS MS66 CAC. This is easily my favorite coin and the last one I'd sell. I asked Mark Feld to look at it for me as I was vacationing with my family during a 2013 Long Beach Heritage auction. We were talking on the phone when he came to it. As I recall he said something like "Oh wow! This is a special coin. Don't be afraid to stretch for this one." When the lot came up I was sitting with my wife on a beach a little after sunrise. I watched the action from my phone and was thrilled when my bid held up. When it arrived it was even better than expected. In-hand.... well, it's indescribable.
1837 Half Dime. PCGS MS62 Gold CAC. This coin came from David Kahn. The no-stars look is fabulous and now I have my own little miniature Gobrecht dollar.
1878 Three Dollar Gold. PCGS AU58 CAC. I acquired this coin from Russ Agustin. I had noticed it on his website and the photos looked pretty nice, but financially I just couldn't make it work at the time. A few months later I wandered by his table at a show and I couldn't believe it was still available. I don't think anyone would complain about this in an MS62 holder.
1834 Half Cent. PCGS MS65BN CAC. This is a new addition that I picked up at a Long Beach Heritage auction earlier this year. It was the first time I've bid in person and from lot previewing I knew it was pretty special.
1892 Columbian. PCGS MS66 CAC. This coin came from the same show and really knocked my socks off. The luster and colors are just tremendous in-hand. This design set the bar for all other commems to follow. From Bonnie Sabel.
1869 Seated dollar. PCGS MS62 CAC. This coin punches above its weight in the eye appeal department. It's technically graded correctly but would be hard to improve on at the price point. From a Heritage auction.
1913 Buffalo Nickel. PCGS MS 67+ CAC. Of all business-strike coins in our country's history, perhaps none is more purely American than this one. The design is a masterpiece of utilization of space and the rough fields give it so much character. The rose/blue toning is really stellar in-hand. From a Summer Fun Heritage auction.
1812 CBH. PCGS MS64+ CAC. A type collector has a problem when it comes to the CBH. There are literally too many to chose from...... so I chose this one. It isn't exactly what I thought I wanted, but it REALLY caught my eye while lot previewing. Photos don't really do it justice. From a recent Long Beach Heritage auction.
1904 Double Eagle. MS65 CAC. From Minnetonka Coins at a recent Summer ANA show. These big coins make a strong impression even when at lower grades. When they glow like this one they're really special.
1910 Barber Dime. MS67+. Ex Duckor. From a Central States Heritage Auction. There were many excellent Barber dimes in this auction and a trusted advisor told me this was the best one within my budget. The pseudo-cameo of the portrait and other devices is really nice against the toned fields.
1976-D Bicentennial Kennedy. PCGS MS67. From James Sego at the Portland ANA show. I wasn't looking for a clad Kennedy until I saw this one. It begged and begged to jump in my bag so I paid the ransom. Not many clad coins carry this palette of colors over flashy lustrous surfaces.
1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. PCGS F12. Many years ago Mark Feld caught me looking at really horrible early dollars at a Long Beach show when I was even more wet-behind-the-ears than I am now. He gently suggested that I reconsider and a few months later he located this one. The deeply clashed obverse gives a fascinating insight into the early production of these coins. I did a thread about the coin's interesting journey from an old man's pocket to me.
1917 Type I Standing Liberty Quarter. PCGS MS66FH CAC. SLQ's don't come like this. They just don't. The coin photographs beautifully, but it's way better in-hand. From Tom Bush who had it in his personal collection. I had the phenomenal fortune of seeing his listing before anyone else had a chance at it.
1820 Large Cent. PCGS MS64BN CAC. I'm trying to find something about this coin that I don't like. I can't. The die breaks are cool. The electric-blue luster over chocolate is really gorgeous and detail is full. From David Kahn.
1906-D Barber Half. PCGS MS66. From a Heritage auction. This coin did not earn a CAC sticker. It should have.
1797 Small Eagle Bust Dollar. PCGS VF30. I found this coin at a Summer ANA Stacks-Bowers auction. It looked pretty darn nice and a trusted friend also like it. I threw in a bid and was on the phone with the SB folks during the auction. I was lucky to get it and was able to trace it to an individual who lives in a town I lived in for several years. We traded a few e-mails back and forth and it was fun to make the connection.
1806 Draped Bust Half. PCGS AU50 CAC. I previously acquired a DBH that just wasn't all that nice that had been purchased without doing enough research. I resolved to replace it with a strong coin and when this one showed up, it accomplished this goal to perfection. From John Agre at CRO. In-hand it's just phenomenal.
1889 Seated Quarter. PCGS rattler MS65 Gold CAC. I've looked at coins in PCGS MS67 holders that are clearly inferior to this coin. I swear it's lit from within..... maybe it's even radioactive. I've worried about paying up for coins, but with this one it didn't bother me a bit. From Tom Bush.
1926-S Oregon Commem. PCGS MS67 CAC. This coin is really special to me. I live only a few miles form the Oregon Trail and ruts from the wagon trains are still visible in certain places. The impetus for the coin's design came from a doctor in Pocatello, Idaho which is only a few miles from home. The design is largely regarded as one of the finest of all coins and fittingly was done by the husband-wife team of James Earle and Laura Garden Fraser. It embodies everything I love about the West. Even more special, the coin was in the "Bear Legacy Collection" and came to me from a Legend auction. When you can, please have a jelly doughnut in Bear's honor.
1909 Indian Cent. PCGS MS66RD CAC. This coin looks like it came out of the mint yesterday. From Dave Wnuck.

Here are a few of mine:
1842 $5 Large Letters in an old fatty AU55 ex Jimmy Hayes and Ed Milas. Purchased at the 2015 CSNS sale of the New Orleans Collection.

1842 $2.5 P45 CAC bought from Doug Winter in 2009?. This date is one of the most underrated coins in the series and at one time was considered a major US rarity.

1842-D $5 Large Date Large Letters P55 CAC. This issue is the rarest Dahlonega half eagle in high grade and the second rarest behind the 1861-D in an absolute sense. Bought from Doug Winter in 2014. Sold in the Buddy Ebsen sale.

1800 $5 P55 CAC, just about the nicest piece of circulated early gold one could imagine. Bought from RYK.

1847-O $5 P35 CAC, a rare coin and the most sought after New Orleans half eagle. This coin is likely in the top 10 in rarity for the series and is the nicest circulated example I have ever seen though I'm sure better are out there. Bought from DW the morning after a long night out at a friends wedding in Omaha. Best decision I made that weekend.

1853-D $5 P40 CAC, a relatively common coin in common grade with exceptional eye appeal. From RYK

1858-S $5 P58 CAC, a very rare and under rated coin with maybe 50 extant. This being likely the finest known if you account for quality. From DW and purchased while walking the Plaza Mayor in Madrid.

1859-S $5 P53 CAC, bought off eBay while at my sisters wedding rehearsal dinner. Was in an ICG 55 crossed to P53.

1848 $5 P58 CAC, another commoner coin with uncommon features. Rumored to have been found in the cornerstone of a church in the south. Matches similar coloration as a small ground of coins dated 1851 which appear from time to time all from the same source.

1803-NR JJ 8 Escudos P65 bought from Andy Lustig. Simply the finest Charles IV 8E of any date and the only 65 graded.

1767-LM JM 8 Reales, one of the most attractive Pillars on the planet. P63+ from CRO.

1733-MX/XM 4 Reales P63 ex. Norweb and the finest 4R I've seen or that PCGS has graded for the type. Ex CRO, Rudman, Norweb

1761-MO M 2 Reales P64 ex Cardinal. Just a beautiful coin for my Spanish Milled set

1743-MO M Real P65, bought raw in Germany for 100 euro. Turned into the first Pillar real graded 65.

1779/7-PTS 4R P62, the finest graded Charles III 4R for the type. Bought from CRO

1846-NG 2R P58 ex. Andy Lustig. Amazing piece with a great design and color

1815-PTS Sol P66 ex. Coco Derman. From CRO via another auction, this coin has been referenced in the Argentina numistmatic books since the 70's and is the finest example for the type by a mile.

Some toned coins I am very fond of.

PCGS MS64. Bought from stacks auction in 2014. Paid way to much but had to have it. Just loved the look.

PCGS MS65. Bought from Eagle Eye. Again I paid moon money but loved the toning. Coin really pops in hand!

PCGS MS65RB. Bought from Heritage auction in a NGC 66RB holder. Crossed a point lower because of a thin light scratch that I did not notice while viewing the coin. You can not see the scratch in the photo. Still love the look.

PCGS MS64RB. Bought from Eagle Eye in a NGC 64BN holder. Crossed to a PCGS 64BN then 64RB finally. The color on the obverse is like none other I have seen. It is a lovely Powder Blue and Gold.

PCGS MS64RB. Bought from a private collector. I sold the coin and wish I still owned it. It is the shallow N variety.

PCGS MS65RB. Bought from Heritage in 2014. Got this coin a lot cheaper than I was willing to pay. Gorgeous look! It is also an unattributed S-15.

PCGS MS63BN. Bought from teletrade in 2012 slabbed in a NGC 62BN holder. Took 2 tries to cross then crossed a point higher. I know there are fingerprints but I find the coin extremely attractive. Looks like blue tiger stripes.

PCGS MS65RD. Bought from Heritage in 2012. With the gold portrait over red fields the coin has a cameo appearance.

PCGS MS65RD. Bought from Eagle Eye in 2013. A lustrous example I find very attractive.

NGC MS65RD. Bought from Ebay in 2012. Old NGC fatty holder with gold label on the back. The coin is RB but the toning is original and exquisite.

PCGS MS66RD. Bought from Heritage in 2012. CAC and Photo Seal. Has the look that I like.

PCGS MS64RB. Bought from ebay. Nice deep original toning. Unattributed S-1.

PCGS MS64BN. Bought from Ebay in 2013 in a NGC 64RB holder. It was an unattributed S-10. Now has the variety on the holder.

PCGS MS65RD. Bought from Heritage in 2013. Gorgeous color with deep luster. The colors give this coin a cameo appearance. One of my favorite coins to look at!

PCGS MS66RB. Bought from Heritage in 2013 in a NGC 66 Holder. Nice color with great Luster.

PCGS MS65RD. Bought from Stacks in 2014. Amazing color and luster. Hard to put it down when looking at it.

PCGS MS65BN. Bought from Heritage in 2014. Tried to upgrade to RB but no dice. The coin is a RB coin! Had to sell but wish I hadn't.

PCGS MS66. Bought from heritage in 2016. I liked the color.

PCGS MS64. Bought from Heritage in 2016. NGC 64 holder that I thought would cross a point higher. I was wrong but still think the coin is better than a 64.

PCGS MS64+. One of my newest coins. Not toned at all but a coin that is hard to put down. One of my favorite coins!

This post took me a couple hrs to put together so I hope you enjoy it. Some day I hope to have some of the higher end coins like posted above.

I focus much more on the Latin American areas now while still retaining maybe half of that old gold.

I do not have any pictures , but I got most of my coins in the box of 20 from parking lots. I think that I have some really rare errors.
