Ebay gift cards again

AstroJoeAstroJoe Posts: 310 ✭✭✭

I am somewhat confused. Looking at coins on EBay, I went to purchase a couple, I looked at ask a question, on how to pay for item. One of the questions Can I use EBay gift cards for purchase, answer is yes you can use eBay gift cards to purchase. mind you, this was for a peace dollar and V nickel. and both times my gift cards would not be accepted. Since I committed to purchase them, I paid, through Paypal with my Credit card. That was one of my criteria to purchase the coins. I have people that have given me gift cards, only come to find out they are no good. later, I read eBay does accept gift cards for coinage, etc.
But just about every dealer says they will accept them. Could I force dealers to redeem them? Or will this be something lawyers will have to court to hack out. I think we should all be reimbursed on gift cards that we are not able to use.

Just typing out loud

Yes, but why do coin sellers say they accept them. Either Ebay is wrong or the seller is wrong. One could report every coin sale out there in Ebay. I see all these sellers out there ready to accept the cards, and dealings are going across state lines,
This would be under federal jurisdiction. Or am I making a mountain out of a mole hill.

How does one get an ebay gift card? I frequently buy items (sometimes even coins :D ) on ebay...However, I do not get any offers of gift cards or other enticements.... Cheers, RickO

I think they are referring to the kind that is bought at the store.

    not entirely.

there is no secret sauce on these. they are either bought as a gift and given to you or you buy them for yourself.

I am guessing there were too many issues with ebay eating it for "fake" items.

we'd use them for putting earned ebay bucks onto them since the cards don't expire like bucks do. they put an end to that practice by first making GC not usable for C&P then by making GC ineligible for receiving bucks.

@MsMorrisine.... OK... Thanks, that makes sense.... I was misinterpreting the term 'gift'...as if ebay handed them out to reward people.... Never thought of a gift card for bidding/buying on ebay.. interesting. Cheers, RickO

Coin sellers likely don't realize it eBay doesn't accept them. As a seller on eBay, you don't have a whole lot of control over what payment methods you can accept, as well as how people make those payments. You being declined the ability to use gift cards on coins is due to eBay, not due to sellers. They don't have any control to that level, nor do I see a point in not accepting them, either.

I totally disagree. At times stores that sell them, offer incentives such as 20% of the gc or 4 x gas points. I take advantage of those type of offers, but only for merchant g.c.'s that I normally use ie...Home or Office depot, Target, Amazon and Restaurant that I frequently use. This week, Giant Food has a deal: buy $100 Master/Card gc & get $10 off your grocery bill. Just to name a few examples. In addition, you can use your cc to buy them and receive your rewards or cash back offered by your cc bank.

OPA, I am talking about gift cards to be used as gifts and not to game the system.

Many people never use a gift card, lose them or misplace them and forget about them.

Businesses love gift cards as they get your cash upfront and a certain percentage are never redeemed.

The other thing is if you give someone a gift card to a store they don't go to or like, the "value" of the gift card is less as they would NEVER spend cash at that store.

Any nephew, niece, son, daughter, grandchild would much rather have cash then some plastic card.

On ebay: the buyer is never wrong, ebay is never wrong and the seller is usually wrong. Regardless of what a seller's listing says, it will not be allowed to violate ebay policy.

EBay should inform sellers to change terms for purchase.
One could report just about sellers of coins, then EBay would have to take all listings off?
I'm sure there have been attempts to bypass this issue in the past year.
