Agreed. The NGC coin isn't a 66 either, in my opinion, with those distracting frost breaks, but I like it better than 2K's (ex-)coin.
My opinion, it's nothing personal towards anyone.

Thanks, Dimitri. Threw it up on eBay while deciding where to consign it and it sold almost immediately. The buyer received it today and followed up with a thank you email. Apparently he's been looking for an example like this for a while.

Man, what a detective Zohar has become! And he didn't even haave any skin in the game, nor was it exactly his area of coins.
Not mine either, but it was a tempting coin to buy, especially at Roman's reasonable price.Seems people see potential for even more flips, adding almost 50% or more Ι guess to its initial value.0 -
Ebay has been flooded with fakes of various Mexican crown sized coins lately. Not good fakes but folks are going to get burned and maybe the value of the slabbed coins will go up . Might be a good type to hold a bit if its slabbed.

It was a neat experiment heavily relied on people appreciating not only the coin, but the plastic it's housed in. I paid MS64 price for it due to a number of high risk factors (unknown private seller in Mexico, luster breaks on high points, etc...) and it worked out pretty well. I enjoyed the hunt. Looks like the new owner is having second, although the increased premium he's adding is surprising. He should consign it to Heritage or another auction house, in my opinion, and let it ride.

To me this may signal the coin is not really a 66...

One of the reasons I got it was due to the holder and the grade on the holder. My target market for this was registry players who would go after the plastic and the grade first. The coin has nice clean fields, so the 66 grade is not a huge stretch, but I think it took some beating inside the holder all these years that resulted in luster breaks on high points of the obverse that are further highlighted by the toning. My plan for this coin was to first try to sell it to registry players in the OGH as a 66. If that didn't work, I would consign it to NEN, Atlas, or another dealer. If it didn't sell, I would conclude that the holder premium is not enough to sell it as a 66, so I would send then do one of two things: either send it in for a reholder (which would come back as a SecurePlus 66 but still with the same visual luster breaks on the obverse), or crack it and dip it, making the luster breaks much less obvious, and submitted it to PCGS at which point it would have came back either a 65 with a shot at 66.
It was a gamble coin from the get-go and continues to be that, it seems.

Last year at Heritage, an MS66 sold for 9K so I guess there is a reason. But I would not pay 9K for this coin.

Let me grouse about this forum software yet again and say that I hate how when you click in, it takes you to the last post in the thread, instead of the first one at the top. Which inevitably lands me in the middle of a conversation where I have no idea what is going on, and I have to backtrack to Page 1. That is just one of the things that I loathe about this platform. When PCGS/CU switched to it in 2016, I jumped ship and went over to CoinTalk.

I have been wanting one for two or three years now, and have yet to take the plunge.
When I do, I assuredly will not be able to afford an MS66 example. Low MS is my goal.
