Take a gamble with me.

From a Facebook contact from Mexico that I have never met before in-person. He does seem like someone who has an eye for quality and originality.

Hopefully I'm not buying a lump of coal in a padded envelope. OGH 1913 Caballito in MS66.

I will post updates as they become available.

I think I'd take that gamble though I don't know what you paid.

  • JohnnyCacheJohnnyCache Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Looks sweet, best of luck.
    I'm excited for the updates.
I find the Caballito's to be one of the most beautiful coins.
I've been actively seeking one that has "the look" I long for.

Maybe I'm seeing things, but it appears to have too much high point rub for a 66. There are serious collectors of these things who do go to Mexico to buy them, so while you may hope it's been overlooked, don't count on it.

May I ask the name of the seller? I may know him/her.

I don't think this will qualify for the numismatic gladiator contest.

Good luck, not many in ms 66 condition. I like the reverse, hard to tell on the obverse from the pics, maybe the lighting.

Yup, agree as well :) I don't think it was overlooked, just that nobody wanted to gamble. In any case, if all goes well and I receive it without any problems, off to PCGS it goes for a reholder into a Secure Plus plastic. I bought it to flip and to establish a relationship.

Looks nice to me. I'll bet it's a winner.

Keep us updated. Love that type!! I have a good feeling that luck will be on your side with this one. Bet is looks absolutely killer in that OGH, which by the way looks well taken care of. Shame the OGH has to go, but hey, might get a bump...there are seven 67's graded at PCGS for that year.

Seller contacted me last Thursday to tell me he received the payment (meaning PayPal withdrawal came into his bank account) and will ship the coin over the next few days. He said he will provide me with tracking info as soon as he does.

Not a fan of the fact that receiving PayPal alone wasn't reasons enough to ship and he wanted to ensure the funds get deposited.

Let's hope he/she is just being overly cautious to protect themselves and not acting nefarious in this transaction.

Here's to wishing you the best possible outcome, and I remain excited to see the coin when you receive it, may you have good luck with this.

That's got asheland written all over it. ;)

Other than preventing a future chargeback, what would be his motive for emptying his PayPal account prior to shipping the coin?

Distrust of the system? Not sure how things are in Mexico, but I have some friends in Russia that consider payment as complete only when they have "money in hand". That, or he is worried about a chargeback. Although even if he pulls the money out, PayPal can refund the payment under the buyer's protection program.

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,714 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think you're covered regardless with using paypal.

Doesn't look good - seller provided me with a FedEx Express tracking number a few days ago that is sitting in "Label created" stage, which means he probably printed one off online without letting FedEx know to pick-up the package or dropping it off in the local FedEx office. When sent him a note yesterday about it, he said he'll get it shipped today. The local Guadalajara fedex offices are closing in 2.5 hours...

  • StorkStork Posts: 5,207 ✭✭✭✭✭

Oy. Hope he's just on a more relaxed personal schedule. That is such a gorgeous coin I hope this works out...so we can drool over new pictures.

  • TwoKopeikiTwoKopeiki Posts: 9,851 ✭✭✭✭✭

Well, the tracking updated today, so looks like he mailed *something. Should receive it within 2 days.

  • bronco2078bronco2078 Posts: 10,425 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've also seen people outside the US be more careful with paypal payments before. I think you will get the coin . It does look a little rubbed or maybe its the way its struck the edges of the robe don't seem as sharp as they could be

  • MilkmanDanMilkmanDan Posts: 3,761 ✭✭✭✭✭

Good luck! Love the look of the coin.

All in all - pretty happy with the coin. Not sure how solid it is for the grade, but it has a very nice clean field around the eagle.

Thank you for taking this ride with me :)

Great technique 2K! Single handed opening (with the help of customs) - seems like a very nice coin!

  • pruebaspruebas Posts: 4,641 ✭✭✭✭✭

How much of that toning came from the onions (I thought there were some onions near the potatoes)?

Glad it arrived safely. Now you can stick it in a Heritage auction and someone will buy it for the holder! B)

My wife wants me to keep it, but I think i'll end up doing just that and use the cash to pick-up another nice MS 8 Reales for my main set.

You can find a nicer coin in your collecting interest and you will be happier. Flip it! HA Long Beach Sept 2017. Too late for Chicago and probably not valuable enough for ANA (though you could try).

Let us know when you sell, or perhaps on the BST? There are a few 'horse' collectors around here...

The anticipation and excitement... topped by a video of the unboxing. And looks like quite a score! Epic! :)

  • cecropiamothcecropiamoth Posts: 969 ✭✭✭✭✭

That reverse field looks amazing! So happy this worked out for you. Assuming it is a 66 and that it would not upgrade to a + or 67, does it bring more in an HA auction in the OGH or reholdered to Secure Plus with a Truview image taken? Personally I love the OGH, but an image of the coin being available could also add value.

  • TwoKopeikiTwoKopeiki Posts: 9,851 ✭✭✭✭✭

Will do, Cathy. Someone else reached out to me about it and if it doesn't go through I'll drop you a note.

Jeff, I don't think it's a 67, so it will stay in the OGH. Lots of folks like the old holder.

Roman, how's the toning? More colorful, as suggested in the initial pics, or more original, b/w as in your latest images?

The video was exciting, but too much unpacking, too little coin. ;)

Dimitri, the toning is closer to my last images. There are a few spots of orange and the overall light golden hue, but overall the coin is not as drastic as the seller's photos which I suspect were done using natural (warmer) light.

I always like it when I open packages and it is exactly like it is supposed to be.

  • marcmoishmarcmoish Posts: 6,629 ✭✭✭✭✭

This was fun - nice how you subtly included your better half in this Oscar winning production.. I was trying to make out what's in the red bowl at 0.27 seconds but we already ruled out potatoes :#

Seriously nice piece but agreed looks like a solid 66 period.

I would vote for this thread being one of the more exciting, well executed threads opened in '17 .

  • TwoKopeikiTwoKopeiki Posts: 9,851 ✭✭✭✭✭

Thanks, marcmoish! For me the excitement of the "hunt" is a very big part of collecting and hopefully I was able to share some of it with the folks here :) To address the mystery of the red bowl - my wife was making schi, a traditional cabbage soup, so the bowl contained shredded cabbage.

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,714 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm glad it worked out! Awesome coin! :)

Well, cabbage has a lot of sulfur too, just like onions! I'm sure it was delicious.

Enjoyed the "unboxing"...quite funny actually. Glad the deal worked out!

Ok, finally stopped being lazy and got my camera and lights out. Took a while, but i think this is the best representation of the coin with the right white balance and light that highlights luster and color.

  • pruebaspruebas Posts: 4,641 ✭✭✭✭✭

Good photo, but I still wouldn't buy it as a 66 regardless of the holder.

Good gamble, I have a hard time with the horse peso series. The strike is a challenge to me. It looks likes a nice coin, I do like the head of the horse. Seems like the OGH helped with a bit of premium.
