A Panama - Pacific Five Piece Coin Box

It is interesting how the octabonal $50 gold still grabs more collector interest than the round piece despite the fact that it is not as scarce and has a lower catalog value. The same thing was true, of course, back in the day where more of them were sold.

Here are close-ups of each piece. The round $50 piece is nicer despite the fact that it was graded by NGC and is in the "dreaded" white holder.

I think I sold my box for $800, but that was 8-10 years ago. It was in decent shape and the hinges were good (as I recall).

In the 80's a dealer-friend had a complete in copper set. Out of my price range at something like 80-90K

I think part of the attraction for the Octagonal is that it was the plate coin on the cover of certain prominent numismatic publication(s). Also the fact that it replicated the slugs from California gold rush era added to its desirability.

I know those were both considerations for me. I opted only for the Octagonal of the two, along with the smaller Pan-Pac pieces.

Building on what @northcoin said, I think the octagonal is more interesting to more collectors because it is different. It is the only octagonal coin issued by the US and thus is different. The fact it is similar to the gold rush slugs and has dolphins can only help.

Here one is. Heritage sold this one for $4,112.50 in April 2013. Anthony Swiatek reported that he has seen a counterfeit of this piece with a fake top ribbon and inferior workmanship with regards to the copper. This item was made by Shreve & Co.
