And I forgot to add, this is 1 reason I have best offer on all my stuff (average about 300 listings per month) is that I screen the offers to check their feedback, and this person I would have preemptively blocked.
I don't understand. What is the final resolution? Did the buyer return the item? Did you have to refund the whole amount, the whole amount minus shipping both ways, or no refund at all?
Well that is a great result.... certainly not as expected by the majority here....It is good that his ID is now public.... I am sure all forum members who sell on ebay have since blocked this fool.... Cheers, RickO
blocked...after reviewing the feedback that he left over the years, it appears that you are not the only one that he scammed. It would not surprise me if he gets NARU'd.

I issued a refund. I don't see ebay making me whole after talking with them on the phone yesterday. I was told that is the cost of doing business.

So the bottom line, they sent you a very sympathetic e-mail telling you how right you are, how much they side with you, protect you, and warn the buyer, but you have to pay the bill for all that out of your own pocket.
Haha, now that everyone reading this thread has blocked him, I can't wait until a member on this board gets a message from him asking why he couldn't bid/buy one of our coins. We should set up a small pool and the first one of us to get his PM asking why he was blocked wins! Ah....priceless!
The pictures in the auction show that the front of the holder had quite a few scratches. Perhaps that's what the buyer didn't like about the item. Did the buyer happen to use your packaging with the staples to return the item? I have received plastic holders where a seller had a stapled invoice sitting on top of the plastic holder. The staple and plastic moves around during shipment and you wind up with a scratched holder.

As a side note: I never use staples when shipping coins. Not saying that had an impact on this case, it's just that staples are not needed. I honestly cannot recall receiving a coin via USPS that had staples in it.
Those reverse slab scratches are deep and were inflicted by a resentful and angry buyer, on purpose. The buyer's email proves to me he is a bit psychotic.
I just tried to block him but I got an invalid user ID error... Could they have already deleted the account?
EDIT: Nevermind, apparently it is case-sensitive. blocked
My guess is that he had problems with the packaging and used a sharp device to open it and scratched it along the way. Then tried to use the guarantee as his out.

It isn't worth having battles royale over collectibles in my opinion. The buyer was a jerk and couldn't even open a securely wrapped package, however it is possible to wrap things "too well" making it hard to open under $100 parcels with coins. All the auction companies I have bought from have sent even valuable gold coins in easily opened parcels. I'm not sure why private sellers employ overkill. It looks like all you had to do was scratch the surface and the guy went bonkers.
There are no staples anywhere near the coin or the slab! I place the slab or coin in a bubble mailer(cut to size to protect the slab)...insert that inside a cardboard envelope(like a priority flat rate),staple around the Bubble mailer to keep it from moving around, and then stable the cardboard to the manila envelope. Basically if the coin is going to be separated from the address label the package will have to be destroyed! It is not difficult whatsoever to open!

If those are just scrapes, a buffing wheel and some tripoli will make the holder new again. A board member requested that I be specific if scratches were on the coin surface or the holder so I just knocked them off. Admittedly they weren't as extensive as the OP ones, but they will probably buff down pretty easily.

Put me in the camp that thinks the buyer was considering the slab "Packaging" and wanted to take the coin out. I know it seems bizarre but people can be bizarre.

So eBay did nothing as far as I can tell. If that rambling nonsense above is your idea of them stepping to the plate, they struck out!
I have a feeling if he would have waited on the refund, he would not have had to give one. But since he already gave it to them, there was nothing they could do.

It's possible it was damaged by the Postal Service machinery. I used to ship slabs packaged somewhat similar to your method. Twice they arrived at my buyer with cracked slabs. I now package well-padded inside a hefty cardboard box. I've had no broken slab complaints since.

I never even thought of that... WOW. Can people be that STUPID?
This guy is something else! I have not contacted him since I issued his refund! I thought once you blocked someone they could not contact you. Wondering if ebay sent him a stern warning! He sent this message this morning:
Well it is apparent based on your statement here: "I sleep well at night. I hope you do as well." that you or someone working on your behalf is responsible for the threatening phone calls in the middle of the night tonight. We have also received a strange and threatening message from some other person in Waltham, Massachusetts, so happens we know the Police Chief there personally and have rung him up this evening and explained the situation. Our family attorney and another retired flag officer will be having a personal phone call with Chris Carr the Attorney General for the State of GA, tomorrow. We intend to file formal complaints with ANA and PNG as well as file a formal letter with Dave Hall. We would ask you cease the harassment and threats via telephone. We will also be considering Federal Litigation against you and John Doe's 1-5 inclusive in order to get to the bottom of the telephonic threats received this evening. You are right about several things, 1.) the Collectors community is quite small 2.) our country and world is quite small (you will be surprised at just how many people we know after serving for 34 years.
We ask that you Cease your unlawful conduct and retain competent legal representation.
Please do not respond and please no more threatening phone calls, we will not tolerate this sort of behavior and we have several unsolicited threatening messages which reference you. Your threat below has been received and the fact of the multiple phone calls of threatening nature demonstrates you are in some way behind this harassment. Why else would you make a comment that you sleep well at night and hope we do as well and then multiple threatening phone calls are made in the middle of the night as to make sure we do not sleep well?
You should inform you legal counsel that we will seek enforcement of Georgia Code Title 16, Chapter 5, Article 8; your legal counsel can explain the penalties which include up to 20 years incarceration.

blocked. Ebay came through.

It's probably because most of my sales are from repeat buyers, but not all are so I guess I'm kind of fortunate.
But a seller can do everything right and still get a crazy buyer or a buyer who is trying to scam you.

At the least I would have told him I agree to a refund after the item is returned. Hopefully you at least get your coins back.

Ebay did not compensate me.
I have shipped thousands of packages using this method and have been praised many times for my safe and secure packaging.
Of course I received the coin! How could I take pictures of the damage to the slab otherwise?
Yeah...probably a good idea!
